For those who have read it, what are y'all's opinions of this book? Worth the purchase?

I saw some negative reviews in your other thread. I liked it as a one time read, although, I've never read any book more than once. It's a good book by an LSU alum football player who is a good sportswriter. It's not earth-shattering, but it's solid. I liked it.

It's melancholy. It's more about his transition into civilian life and dealing with no longer being an LSU football player. I think a lot of people that read it when it first came out were disappointed in it because it wasn't really what it was marketed as. ETA: I still enjoyed it. But I'm from Opelousas and know some of his family and have read almost everything he's written.

This. I expected more on his time playing ball at LSU. It was definitely geared towards his time right after. Still a good read. I blew through it extremely fast.

I enjoyed it finished it last month after having it for a couple years. I thought he gave a great outlook on athletes who leave a sport that they love. But other than a few stories on other Tiger players Coach Mac and the Trojans game its mostly about him moving on and the difficulty because of the greatness he experienced as a player.. Which is obviously something most negatigers/positigers will not ever experience. Including myself

Had it not involved LSU football then I'd have used it as a replacement for the Sears-Roebuck catalog in my outhouse.

Good description of the book and I agree. He shares some interesting facets of his career but overall the book was very meh IMO.

Ditto, like someone said, if it wasn't related to LSU football, and other familiar things, it would not be worth reading. I don't know where he was in his career as a writer, but he's not a great writer (although I support all LSU alumni and wish them success.) Also, seems very depressed and whiny. Other than that, super book, I read it in an hour and a half.

It's very much worth reading. It is indeed whiny at times, but that doesn't mean that it's not a good story. And the picture he paints of the program and Cholly Mac is moving.
