Not much. Not enough to make any kind of impact.
I've played basketball all of my life and I have never noticed a hard dunk taking "way more energy" than a regular dunk.
While technically yes, I'm sure it takes more energy, it's not enough to even notice or feel it.
Boxing out and rebounding takes way more energy than a wide-open dunk.

People have covered the reasons, but if it's a home game and it's close, it can get the crowd pumped and help a little more than just the two points. I like to see it.

True. I just don't buy that it is because they are trying to "conserve energy".
Dunking 1 or 2 times a game is not something that takes away your energy.

as opposed to a layup, it does. how can you not see this? those 1 or 2 a game come out to be 100-150 a game. one dunk might not directly hurt them but they can add up. bottom line the dunk isnt necessary.
same as some RBs and wide receivers going out of bounds instead of taking the hit. keeps you in the league longer

It's not a big deal. I was just wondering if anybody knows why this changed. Some players still throw it down when wide open.
I've just noticed more players dunking without even touching the rim... like they are trying to do it as lightly as possible.
Some even act like they are about to slam it down hard and then just place it in the basket without even touching the rim.
I was speculating either it is a new way to showboat by doing the opposite of a hard dunk and making it purposely delicate. Or if some players just want to make sure they get the points. Or something else.
Then people started saying that it was because they want to conserve energy, or are afraid they'll hurt their hand, etc. And I didn't buy that stuff for a second.

And I am telling you that what you are saying is a crock of horse manure.
Jumping high as opposed to jumping just "kind of high" isn't going to make any kind of a difference with regards to anything at all.
Basketball players are constantly jumping during a game whether it is rebounding, shooting, blocking shots, jump balls, lay-ups, dunks, etc.
Dunking the ball isn't going to make any kind of difference.

I know what you're saying. It's not an energy thing. Most of the time they are high above the rim and they basically throw it in instead of grabbing the rim. I think some of them do it just to do it, like something new. It was big a couple of years ago but it seems like it's phasing out.

I knew a guy in high school that was 6'10 and refused to dunk a basketball. Said he didn't want to hurt his wrists. He also got cut from the team.
But some guys just aren't showboats. 2 points are 2 points regardless of how exciting it looks.

See, that's crazy to me lol.
I have hurt my hands/wrist before, but it doesn't happen often.
It would only happen when I'd misjudge how far I jumped and my hand over-shoots the basket and hits the base of my hand/wrist area.
I've also bruised a finger before on the part of the rim that holds the net in place.
But it's not often that stuff like that happens. Dunking doesn't hurt... only when you mess up can it hurt.
