When NBA players all alone on a fast break, why don't they throw it down?

I can remember when players were wide open down the court for an easy dunk, they'd slam it down hard. It was "showtime".

Now it seems like they just place it in the basket without even touching the rim.

Is there some rule I'm not aware of? Or are they just making sure they get the points? Or is this just some new thing where guys just like to delicately place the ball in the basket?

What's the deal?

Some guys can't jump. Or maybe they suck at dunking, if that's possible.

good way to conserve energy and your body. this equals longer time making money in the nba. plus the dunk isnt new or anything.

i would like to think this but its not the case for 95% of them

They don't want to hurt their $25 million wrists.

That makes no sense.

It doesn't take much extra effort to slam it hard as opposed to placing it in.

And it's much more satisfying. It gets the crowd into it.

Risk is greater than the reward. Uncontested fast break dunks usually don't get you on the highlights unless it is extra special, but if you frick it up you'll be everywhere.

When you dunk the ball, it can also hurt your hands and fingers. I know Vince Carter said that the one thing he hated the most about dunking was how much the rims used to tear up his hands.

True, but I'm also talking about the force of the dunk.

A hard slam doesn't need to be fancy.

Some guys still throw it down with authority... like LeBron.

why not? there is more risk in hurting yourself when youre dunking as opposed to just laying it in

well the stuff youre talking about it does. a simple layup as opposed to a tomohawk windmill whatever is a big difference

goes back to not worth the risk. maybe if your team has been down and you make a run to get back up and you steal the ball and have a break away, yea slam the shite home and get the place rocking.

if youre up by 15, just lay it in. if anything its more demoralizing to the other team imo

And lebron has often complained about how it hurts his wrists.

Perhaps people have flipped their opinion on how to mock/show off the other team.

Used to be slam the shite out of it.

Now, I'm gonna delicately place this ball I took from you very carefully into the basket, so you can see how easy it was for me to do this, etc. Its almost satirical in a sense or something.

I'm just spitballing here

One dunk is not going to wear you out no matter what dunk it is.

Yeah, it's possible to hurt yourself dunking the ball. I've done it before. I've bruised my hand by hitting a bone accidentally.

But it hardly happens.

How many players have you seen get hurt in NBA games because of a dunk? Especially a wide open dunk?

hell i dunno. im also not talking about hurting themselves like breaking their wrists on the rim. talking wear and tear over a 10-20 year span. it probably adds up

this makes me think you've never really played basketball. if not, you wouldn't understand. a big, powerful dunk takes a lot more out of you than an easy, low effort dunk. it's just the truth. players need to conserve energy.

secondly, i'm not so sure this is even a new trend.

I've probably played more basketball than most people on TD.

I can dunk. I've dunked in games, practice, playing on my own, pick up games, etc.

A dunk takes no more effort than jumping any other time whether it's for a rebound, block, jump ball, etc.

It's just jumping.
