| Thoughts on getting a puppy (Updaqte page 5) (Posted on 1/22/13 at 7:35 am)
I got married 3 weeks ago and we told eachother we'd get a dog after. I have already decided on the breed, WGS, and will be able to get him between 2 and 4 weeks from now. I'm slightly hesitant to do this because we did just get married recently but we were living together before anyway so its not like we haven't enjoyed eachothers company yet.
There will be another litter that will be of age, most likely mid to late May, and that may be a better time but I don't want to wait 4 months to get one.
Any insight from the OT?
When wll the puppy sleep through the night, if I create a schedule?
Kennel or gated area training?
etc.?
I know it is also likely for puppies to get parvo or other diseases until fully vaccinated and they need to be kept inside for the most part, so my plans to bring him to a parade or two (day parades) is out the door.

Wife wants a prettier dog and the white ones are freaking awesome.
If we got a B and T it would need to be mostly tan which is hard to find.
I personally think the white ones are cooler and the personalities are better from what I've been told.
I want a shepherd, she wants a pretty dog.
We both win.

crate train it for sure
make sure the crate is only big enough for the puppy to lay down comfortably, it shouldnt be big enough for it to walk around in.
your puppy will need plenty of bathroom breaks throughout the day/night. So someone needs to come home at lunch and let it out, or hire a dog walker
set your alarm for 1-2 in the morning to let it out

I don't see how some could easily just give ther pups away. I'll be crushed when my dogs pass.

No harm in waiting, especially because you aren't sure what kind of effect it will have.
I'd put it off till the May litter, at least.

Puppies can be stressful!! Especially to a new married couple who are adjusting to their own new world . Wait a year or two is my advice

Already did it. I want a good looking and smart dog.
Very difficult to find in a shelter.
That doesn't make me an a-hole, but the statement does make you a judgemental prick.

Would you want to be kept in a small box for a few hours with a gate right in front of your face? Dont kennel a dog. Gated is fine. Puppies are like babies, they are up for a little while and sleep for a little while. This goes on for about 6 months.

Wait till May. As frequently as puppies have to go to the bathroom, you don't want to be taking them outside in the cold @ all hours of the night ...
