| Homebrewing: Homebrew updates and new beers tried (Posted on 1/21/13 at 10:04 am)
Cracked open a bottle of my bourbon barrel imperial stout. Sits at 9.2% ABV, brewed with 17.25 lbs of grain. Aged 1 month in oak barrel with 8 oz. woodford reserve. Here is my opinion of my homebrew. Tasting Notes: Popped the top, and didn't hear the signature "pshh" sound. Poured into a snifter. No carbonation! I thought to myself, "not again, i undercarbonated". The more i thought about it, i think the cold had something to do with it. I had my bottles in my chest freezer in the garage. Well it hasn't gotten higher than 55 degrees in the garage in the 2 weeks it was supposed to be carbonating. So i believe that is the problem. I have since, moved all the bottles into a closet inside and swirled them a little. Popped a second top the next day and there was low amount of carb, but more than the first day. Tasting Notes: This is a fantastic brew. If it carbonates like it supposed to, this one could win medals, IMO. The first aroma of bourbon is present. The first sip you get a hint of bourbon, but it is mellowed out very well by the oak barrel and is given an almost-vanilla like taste. Then the stout comes through, and is fantastic, and balances out the beer very well. This beer is a slow sipper, and the perfect glass is a brandy snifter. The warm feel of the bourbon mixed with the sweet chocolate/toffee flavor of the stout makes it a perfect cold weather brew. If this thing carbonates the way it supposed to, it's going to be great. My brother and my friend tried it and they both agreed that it was fantastic like it was, but if it carbonates it will be unbelievable. New Beers Tried Brooklyn Black Ops Tried this after my homebrew. Fantastic beer, and was a perfect comparison beer. My brother actually told me that mine tasted better, but the finish on Brooklyn was much better. (probably due to the carbonation). This was probably the most expensive single beer i've ever bought ($25). Very good. Sam Adams Stonybrook Red Not a good beer, IMO. Tasted like that bud light chelada shite. Belgian ale with some "tart" which i assume is some brett bacteria. This one was not for me.

The only two new ones for me lately are the Bayou Teche Joie A Tous and the SN 2013 Ruthless Rye. I enjoyed both. The Bayou Teche was a little weird but still good. All of their beers are a little weird to me, most I don't think are good.

I can see where it would get old quick, but I liked it. It had a lot going on that I found interesting would drink again

Might want to start small with sour beers. Duchesse De Bourgogne or Petrus aged pale ale to see if you like that funk.

Had this last year. Did not like it. I just don't dig sour beers. I can't develop a taste for sours.

No news on the homebrew front. I missed our club's one year anniversary party last night. Anyone in the Nola area know where to get a CO2 refill? I killed my tank this weekened and haven't had to have it filled since I moved from BR.

Homebrewing: No new brewing news this month, but I purchased a new brew kettle and a ton of hops last week. I'm hoping to fire up the new kettle next weekend and get a couple test batches in before Zapps. New Beers: I tried Bell's Hopslam DIPA over the weekend. I passed on it last year bc of the price, but split a six pack with a friend this year. I'm thinking I should have purchased two six packs now.
