re: Public school teaches about "white privilege"

quote:

Imo, this victim mentality is holding black people back. What's in the past is in the past. Complaining wont make the wrong right or change the fact that blacks were once slaves

Where did I complain? Where did I use slavery as an excuse for current day situation?

You're the one who brought up the past. You argued whites are entitled to this privilege because they built it. All I did was counter with a couple of sentences explaining your statement was a bit of revisionist history. Thats all. No where did I "complain."
quote:

As far as current calls for "financial compensation" for slavery. This won't do anything but hurt the black community. For one, our country can't afford it. This would hurt the country and in turn hurt the black community as they live here.

Not really sure where this is coming from or who mentioned financial compensation.
quote:

this money would primarily go towards rims, speakers and liquor.

Don't forget gold teeth and child support to all the baby mamas.
quote:

As an added note, I was not supporting not refuting the argument about genetic predetermination of intellect. I know nothing in that matter and won't pretend to. I was merely stating that IF it is the case, there is little we can do about it

I gotcha.

But all I am arguing is essentially what you wrote: every race and every ethnicity has all the mental tools to be successful in America. If they are not, it is because of other factors.

Individuals have the capacity to be successful in America, races don't do anything as a group.

But the reality is the cognitively deficient will and are having a very hard time in a post industrial society that has high unemployment.
In an agrarian or industrial age there can be many jobs available for those less intelligent in a technical age that does not appear to be the case.

Creating myths that we all can make it if we work hard, or we can all go to college and get a a degree is dangerous bull shite. People with IQ's below 85 will likely have a very difficult time in society.

So I guess some people should give up, use their "IQ" as an excuse and simply never try? Thats definitely not dangerous to society, amirite?

I never suggested that, but apparantly a lot of people do take that course in this ocuntry.

Why have they given up? Why do 1/2 of our black scholars not even graduate from a weak high school system with low standards? Why is unemployment so high in certain segments of the population?

I guess I should clarify that I'm speaking of the black community in general not you. That and "financial compensation" (including government aid) has been stated to have been "earned" by African Americans due to past grievances. Not knocking you at all. Even if we disagree on things, it's pretty obvious you are an intelligent person making something of your self (medschool I assume from your user name and the jargon you use?)

You are missing the point. White people haven't exactly been lounging around while slaves waited on them hand and foot. No one gave my grandparents what they built. They worked for it and you bet you arse they are entitled to reap the rewards.

Yea, you kind of did.

What do you think will happen if this "myth" that working hard and dedicating yourself will reap you benefits in the future is no longer "believed" by many people. Many will say "F it, doesn't matter what I do, I'm doomed apparently."

IDK, maybe you went around telling people that it is a "myth" that if you work hard you can achieve your goals, so they said "F it, it doesn't matter what I do, I'm doomed apparently."

If this is true, maybe the IQ discrepancy is correct. Only a true dumbass would sabotage their own future.

No, I didn't.

What do you think happens when cognitively deficient kids are given an impossible goal. How do they act out that frustration?

What is the point of spending large amounts of money to send dolts to college for worthless degrees?

Society should understand the problem it has not create harmful lies.

Your weak attempt at humor aside, the fact is you won't admit the truth. There ae major levels of dysfunction in certain populations and you believe this just happens to certain groups and in fact a strong correlation between success and intelligence exists you argue intelligence is irrelevant.

re: Public school teaches about "white privilege"

quote:

I gotcha, and your point is well taken.

The "black community" is not some homogenous entity, so I'm not one who defends its every action, just like "the community" does not speak for all of my actions or opinions. Those who continue to use slavery as an excuse to justify not working hard and trying to combat some of its lingering effects are doing a disservice to themselves and their future generations. Thats my viewpoint.
quote:

That and "financial compensation" (including government aid) has been stated to have been "earned" by African Americans due to past grievances

For the record, I am not pro-reparations. I don't know whether it will have no effect or a negative one, but I highly doubt it will be overall positive.
quote:

Good to know there are still some posters around here who can partake in informative, civil discourse, even if disagreements occur.

And yeah, I am in Atlanta for med school. Worse part is everyone knows I am a big time Saints fan, so all these Falcon band-wagoners have been really giving it to me all season

quote:

Maybe not exactly, and I do understand your point. This isn't the 19th century anymore and things have changed. No reason to continue arguing about what happened in the past. My main concern is how to improve things going forward.

If this is the belief, I have to lean toward the IQ angle.

The low IQ have free will, they just are more prone to foolish choices because of their low intelligence. The greatest problem being perhaps not appreciating deferred gratification.

What is the impossible goal they have been given? It is impossible to work hard, stay determined and focused, and try your best?

Nobody is saying everybody has to grow up to be a neurosurgeon. Just that being lazy and content in life is not acceptable.

quote:

strong correlation between success and intelligence exists you argue intelligence is irrelevant.

Where did I argue intelligence is irrelevant? Quote me, please.

Arguing intellectual capacity is not pre-determined before birth =/= saying intelligence is irrelevant when it comes to the attainment of success in life.

I could make a comment about Les Miles being paid millions of dollars to coach one of the top football teams in the country and how that and the fact that he's won a national championship is indication that a cognitive deficit won't necessarily hold you back. But that is frowned upon on this site so I won't make that comment.

It's not the belief, at least it's not mine.

CT is the one arguing for lowering the expectations of certain individuals because telling them they can "be all they can be" if they work hard and stay focused is a "myth" that causes frustration.

You've done a good job of drive-by posting, what do you believe?

re: Public school teaches about "white privilege"

For many of them, getting a real high school diploma, functioning in a real college or university, competing for a limited number of jobs with the more able population. Black or white with an IQ of 85 or lower this is very difficult.

Just that being lazy and content in life is not acceptable.

Why do you think 1/2 of Black kids can't get a HS diploma? Why is unemployment so high?

How do we make this better?

Are you really saying there is no significant genetic component. How do you explain the massive failure in the Black community if intelligence can be significantly improved by social intervention? We spend billions on uplifting the at risk masses, to no real effect. Unless you believe things could be worse!

They why state it?

Without touching on the IQ angle again, society in "black America" has created an atmosphere that seems to praise poor choices. . Aversions to dual parent household and educations are dooming many before they have a chance. Many also seem to find it easy to blame others for their own shortcomings.

Everyone has been given the tools to escape poverty. Some don't take advantage of it.
