Can Mett make that second year Progression?

What seems to be the rule for QBs, is that they make their greatest progression from their starting year to their second year. Some notable recent examples:

AJ McCarron
CMP ATT YDS CMP% YPA LNG TD INT
219 328 2634 66.8 8.03 69 16 5
211 314 2933 67.2 9.34 85 30 3

Aaron Murray
CMP ATT YDS CMP% YPA LNG TD INT
209 342 3049 61.1 8.92 66 24 8
238 403 3149 59.1 7.81 80 35 14

Teddy Bridgewater
CMP ATT YDS CMP% YPA LNG TD INT
191 296 2129 64.5 7.19 58 14 12
287 419 3718 68.5 8.87 75 27 8

Geno Smith
CMP ATT YDS CMP% YPA LNG TD INT
241 372 2763 64.8 7.43 71 24 7
346 526 4385 65.8 8.34 84 31 7

Matt Barkley
CMP ATT YDS CMP% YPA LNG TD INT
211 352 2735 59.9 7.77 75 15 14
236 377 2791 62.6 7.40 61 26 12

Zach Mettenberger
CMP ATT YDS CMP% YPA LNG TD INT
207 352 2609 58.8 7.41 56 12 7

If OL blocks and the WRs catch and coaches get a clue?

Sure.

That and he's gotten his feet wet. WRs seemed to have improved on the earlier season drops. Only thing I can see is OL because I have no doubt that he gets the deep ball down packed. Footwork can be improved to avoid some sacks, but I think if we can somehow get a solid OL then the stone feet won't be too much of an issue.

yeah, if the blocking OL and RB'S can do a better job than they did last year AND the wr's start out catching the balls they should

AND

If Mett learns feel the pressure and knows how to deal with it then absolutely.

All Mett needs is a little awareness and a pocket that isn't crushing him from all sides. The he will be fine.

Despite his overthrows last year he is one of the best long ball throwers I have ever seen... just not last year. Give him time to make a halfway settled long throw and he is money.

I don't think he will ever be able to throw the ball on the run though. Never figured I would be able to throw the ball on the run better than an LSU quarterback but from what he showed last year I think I can best him on that.

He made a few nice throws on The run last year.

His internal clock has to get better. He has to get the ball out. When the pocket collapses early, or the back fails to pick up a blitz, that's on the protection - in all other cases, whether it be a max blitz or he holds the ball too long - he HAS to get the ball out, and it has to be a smart throw. That's the gig - that's the job - that's the deal. I know I make it sound easy (it isn't), but I'm really trying to say that it is not that complicated. One-mississippi-two-mississippi-three-mississippi-throw - either where nobody can catch it (but not grounding), OR a catchable ball. Everybody groans when the QB throws it away and every player on the team wants to make a play, but that's the deal.

Deliver the ball (securely) or throw it away (securely). That's the job description. That's the 411. That's it.

We need Leslie (WR) to be ready for the season.

Solid post, omega. You're right, Mett already arrived. It was all line problems the second half of the year.

Yep, the two things Mett is bad at is throwing on the run and quickness to move out of the pocket and gain yardage. A common misperception on this board is that Mett has poor pocket awareness. This is false. He already is showing a seasoned NFL QB's ability to use the pocket. The problem was that the pocket was caving in too fast. His arm is a treasure!

He definitely has to work on his deep passing and pocket mobility. I got tired of watching him over throw every wide open WR on almost every long pass.

That's what i'm saying and that can be taught or learned through experience. As time goes by, good QBs learn to decrease the INTs and increase the TDs.

Being as immobile as he was and the OL looking anywhere from God awful to decent enough, really hindered him the most. Faster QBs don't really need the 3 second rule as they can move from the pocket and make plays on the run, but with his feet he should take it that as carved in stone.

You don't just "Get" a solid offensive line. That comes from experience and COACHING. The OL coach can't be spending half his time being the OC. OL is too important a position to have a part-time coach. Also, LSU has no CENTER with any playing experience and that doesn't produce comforting feelings coming into the season not having anybody that's made the OL calls except for a few snaps in OOC games.

One of the big problems is the Offensive Scheme. We seem to have no answer to an all out defensive rush. If our O Scheme allowed an outlet to a Tight End or Running back, he wouldn't be so vulnerable to sacks... like he was against Ole Miss, Arky and Clemson.

He's not a super mobile guy, so he needs to quicken his release. That alone will make him dramatically better.
