Anyone here a dog expert? Bought my gf a puppy... (Posted on 1/18/13 at 11:57 pm)
I put down a downpayment bc I bought her a yorkie from a reputable breeder and the pup is currently 7.5 weeks old and we cant get it until the 31st which would be 9.5 weeks. Anyways, I'm reading online that weeks 9-12 are critical to a puppies development and where he learns how to handle his surroundings and where he learns how to interact with other dogs.....anyways before someone says the breeder is bad, it was one of only 2 AKC breeders of yorkies in my state....so its not a bad breeder.....I just don't wanna call her and sound stupid.....
So what's the deal with puppies...is 9.5 weeks ok...or should I call her and ask why numerous internet sources say 12 weeks is necessary before he's ready...
ps-no i didnt want a yorkie, but my gf didn't want a labrador

9 - 12 week thing is not all that important.
Plus it's a Yorkie. They're pretty damn dumb and when you get the dog will matter little. You will never teach that dog anything more than not to piss and shite on the floor.

Dogs are most trainable up until around age 2. Yorkies don't have the mental capacity to learn much to begin with so just get it at age 18 weeks and cram the no pissing and shitting in the house.

If you can get the dog at 9 weeks, do it. I have had two treeing walker coonhounds, brought one home at 9 weeks and one home at 12 weeks. The one I bright home at 9 weeks has been easier to train.

had my choices of beagle puppies. one that was 8 weeks or 14 week. I went with the 8 week because I knew that te 14 week were already running and knew it would be harder to train because I would be chasing them all the time whereas the 8 week would learn to follow. my 2cents.
