| Gun control quote from the Constitutional Convention (Posted on 1/18/13 at 10:08 pm)
quote:
Gentlemen - I fully support the rights of the citizenry to bear arms in support of the freed colonies; however, the rifled barrel is a devise for the battlefield, and is far too dangerous to reside in the hands of the public. Although I support the adoption of the second amendment, reasonable restrictions must apply. Therefore, only unrifled muskets must apply. Author unknown

No author and no link makes it difficult to establish credibility.

And I'm supposed to believe that the farmers, tradesmen and the general population of the time didn't have guns in their homes?

You can find quotes from the convention on most sides of issues. The whole thing was not a unanimous kum ba ya fest.

It's not. The fact that our framers made no distinction between cutting edge military and non military weaponry of the time probably gave it away.

stop making shite up. Then fun things about quotes is if you do a google search on a 5 or 6 words phrase, it is is easy to find the original source. IN this case after doing multiple searches on different phrases in that quote, the only thing that came back was your post on this board.

I would be concerned if people weren't skeptical about the unsourced and and strangely discordant quote above. It is highly suspect due to the lack of period vernacular and typos.

That's the only thing that gave it away?

The rifle was everything BUT a military arm at the time. They were way too slow to load. A more apt comparison was the Blunderbuss. Blunderbusses were the AR15 of their time.

here is what makes this quote false, ther was not a debate on the Bill of Rights at the Constitutional Convention. Duirng the ratification process they had to promise one to the anti-federalist to get passage. Also it was not called the 2nd Amendment then. They did not pass them as a whole slate, but individually. That one eneded up being the 2nd Amendment. Thier were actually 13 amendments proposed. One did not make it...until the 1990's. The one dealing with congressional pay raised not taking effect until after the next election.

FWIW...I'm fairly sure that rifled barrels in "rifles" didn't make a significant appearance until the middle of the 19th century. They were few and far too expensive to make. Not only that, these individuals would have welcomed any advantage a firearm would have offered over anyone or anything threatening their newly won freedom and liberty. Unlike a lot of Americans today, they actually cherished their freedom and were intolerant toward the abundance of frivolous laws, restrictions, and outright lies that had been bestowed upon them by their former king and government.

Well since this guy's idea didn't make it into the constitution it's obvious he had a minority opinion.
