Weekly Standard Whoops: PolitiFact's 'Lie of the Year' Turns Out to Be True By MARK HEMINGWAY Jan 18, 2013 Last month, PolitiFact selected its "Lie of the Year." Given PolitiFact's dubious record of singling out Republicans for lying far more often then Democrats, you probably could have guessed the winner of this particular sweepstakes was a Mitt Romney campaign ad: It was a lie told in the critical state of Ohio in the final days of a close campaign -- that Jeep was moving its U.S. production to China. It originated with a conservative blogger, who twisted an accurate news story into a falsehood. Then it picked up steam when the Drudge Report ran with it. Even though Jeep's parent company gave a quick and clear denial, Mitt Romney repeated it and his campaign turned it into a TV ad. And they stood by the claim, even as the media and the public expressed collective outrage against something so obviously false. "Public expressed collective outrage"? That's essentially wishcasting on the part of PolitiFact, nor are they accurately representing what Mitt Romney said in the ad. In fact, here's PolitiFact's original "fact check" on the matter: [Mitt Romney] Says Barack Obama "sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China" at the cost of American jobs. Ok. Now here's what the Reuters reported earlier this week: Fiat (FIA.MI) and its U.S. unit Chrysler expect to roll out at least 100,000 Jeeps in China when production starts in 2014 as they seek to catch up with rivals in the world's biggest car market. ..."We expect production of around 100,000 Jeeps per year which is expandable to 200,000," [Chrysler CEO Sergio] Marchionne, who is also CEO of Chrysler, said on the sidelines of a conference, adding production could start in 18 months. So, yes, it's confirmed that Jeep will be producing cars in China.

Did Jeep move it's US production to China or did Jeep just start producing Jeeps in China in addition to its US production? From what is quoted, seems like an important distinction.

It moved production jobs/started production in china. There is no distinction to make. What does it matter if they moved or started. Either way they took money and ran

Perhaps an important distinction, but regardless, the "lie of the year" wasn't a lie.

Politifact never said Jeep wouldn't be building cars in China. In fact, in its lie of the year story LINK Politifact specifically states that Chrysler would be expanding production into China. What Politifact called the lie of the year was Romney's stump speech statement that Chrysler was considering shutting down Jeep in the USA and then his ads which insinuated the same. In a nutshell, the Weekly Standard is full of shite.

No its not my friend. All of those cars use to be made here then shipped around the world bringing profit back to us which led to more jobs around the US..

Non-issue. I got this off FactCheck.org: Romney Distorts Facts on Jeep, Auto Bailout Posted on October 29, 2012 , Updated on October 31, 2012 Mitt Romney falsely claimed in a recent speech that “Jeep, now owned by the Italians, is thinking of moving all production to China.” Chrysler says it is considering adding Jeep production sites in China to address rising demand in that market. But the company says it is “a leap that would be difficult even for professional circus acrobats” to suggest that it would close U.S. facilities and move all operations to China. LINK

that Jeep was moving its U.S. production to China.
but they didnt move US jobs to china. they created more than 2000 jobs this fall in ohio and michigan. chrysler was upfront about this from the beginning. they didnt move any jobs.
quote:
China still slaps huge tariffs on cars made outside of the country, so to be viable in the world’s largest automotive market, you have to build in China. That is the crux of the argument American car companies (and Midwestern politicians) have been making for decades: while the US allows imports from all countries, Japan and Korea and now China make it very difficult to export to those countries. This is not fair trade.
LINK they just expanded, like chrysler said they would, while still creating more jobs in america. mitt's lie was that they would decrease american production and outsource labor to china, which is clearly not at all what's happening.

For some reason people are ticked when people buy Toyota's and Honda's in the US, but are equally ticked if the Chinese are buying Jeeps? Jesus, we need them to buy like a hundred billion Jeeps already!
