ott had better stuff than mccune. mccune is working behind the 8 ball because his stuff is mediocre. if he cant locate he's done for. and i think he even started tailing off at the end of his freshment year, then had a bad fall, bad season, bad fall. the bad outweighs the good. with that said if he did turn it around thats great. but i think holding out hope for it is probably not gonna pan out. he's often the first option mentioned on here for sunday starter, i just kinda doubt thats the case in the coaches eyes. just my opinion.

Yeah, I mean, I agree to a certain extent. I think he has a shot, but I think he has a longer shot than others. I also feel like posters will be pushing for Cotton more than any other pitcher by the time the decision needs to be made. But I think guys like Bonvillain, Bourgeois, Lamarche, or Glenn have better shots at the spot than McCune due to upside for the new guys and consistency for the experienced ones.

It's not evident at all. Nobody has any idea what he'll pitch like next March through June when it counts. All we know is that he was the ace of a staff in 2011 that included Gausman, and that he had a sophomore slump in 2012 when he fell out of favor. And he didn't do completely terrible. Granted, he was pitching against much worse competition, but his stats were roughly comparable to those of Eades, except that Eades could get his way out of more jams with strikeouts than McCune could. Pitcher, ERA, IP, H, BB, K, HR, Opp. Avg. Eades, 3.83, 94.0, 107, 28, 63, 8, .296 McCune, 4.04, 42.3, 42, 14, 24, 2, .266 Unless there is something physically wrong with his arm, I don't see what makes another 2011 type of season so unlikely.

i just feel like cotton is much better suited out of the pen than as a starter.

Absolutely. Still, it won't stop rantards from coming out of the woodworks and call for him after the first Sunday starter struggles.

IMO you don't lose a top 5 pick and become better typically.
Unless you're the 2000 LSU Tigers who lost Mr. Ainsworth after the '99 season.

Pitching: The highs won't be as high, but the lows won't be as low. Hitting: No where to go but up IMO. Defense: We've been consistently good in this area under CPM, and I see no reason we won't be again. Speed: On paper at least, a quicker overall club. Base-stealing should be better this year than last. So I'm seeing a slightly better LSU team this year than last.

Replacing Nola & Hanover on defense will be tough.

Nola made some damn fine MLB plays every week. And I think people underestimate his bat. He didn't have a lot for power, and when he did get a hold to one he would hit it straight away center for a long out. But he was a clutch hitter. I liked seeing him in the batters box with someone on base.

Yea the first Sunday we lose people will be screaming for Cotton. I too believe he is more effective coming out the pen then starting. I really hope we can keep him in the pen. He was so dominant and had big moments in key situations last year. As far as McCune is concerned, I haven't thrown in the towel on him just yet. I'm still holding out hope for him. He did have some brief moments where he shined last year ( vs Florida), but they were few and far between. Bottom line is he has to locate pitches better it will be the same story as last season.

Cotton isn't starter, he's a set up guy. His fastball might hit 85. Bourgeois has control issues. Not what you want as a closer. WALKS!!! Rumbelow has the closer spot locked up if you ask me, unless some incoming freshman is just lights out. His fastball has some nasty movement and he's throwing hard. As far the Sunday spot, maybe Bonvillain, maybe Broussard, maybe a newcomer.

I thought Bonvillain was highly overated last season. He had one great performance and then trailed off but kept up the hype. The closer spot is probably the most up in the air spot on the team right now so Rumbelow must not be as awesome as you hoped. I doubt we keep a closer from one month to the next.

Just because Cotton has a slow fastball, doesn't mean he can't start. Bourgeois and Rumbelow had the same amount of walks last season 14. Bourgeois pitched 10 more innings than Rumbelow. Oh and Broussard is out for the season for Tommy John surgery.
