| Having the "Money Talk" with the SO before marriage (Posted on 1/18/13 at 10:55 am)
I am coming up with a plan on what to tell the SO about the money arrangement. How important is this little talk? Are joint checking accounts good ideas(i dont think so)? Can this talk work against me in the future?

I'd say that it is a pretty important conversation.

I'm getting married in 2 weeks and this is probably one of the most important talks to have, if not THE most important talk to have. We've had a joint account and a joint credit card for two years now. After we're married, we will have a joint checking account, a joint credit card, a joint savings account, individual investment/retirement accounts, and each have an individual credit card for gift purchases. I handle the budget and bill payments, but we discuss all major purchases. Works excellent for us

It's whatever works for you, we tried separate accounts but eventually went to joint and it works much better

Don't get married if you think you need to have a "money talk".

I think it's good to get ahead of that issue. It causes the most fights in marriages. Think about what you want to accomplish and plan for it but be open to her ideas ( or at least pretend to). If she feels like you are forcing her into a certain arrangement then every time you bring up money she will blame your arrangement.

I think joint checking account, one pot arrangement is the way to go, but I guess everyone is different. I just wouldn't want the "my money" "your money" thing. You are in it together and responsible for everything together anyway.

Have you ever tried explaining the dynamics of the 46 defense to a 2 year old?

It is critically important to have this talk. You MUST be on the same page as far as what communicating your expectations of what you will both be bringing in, and what you will both be spending. Create a budget. Your SO may piss and moan about it, but it needs to be done. And no hiding debt, either. Shared account during marriage is SOP. Look at it this way... you will be able to monitor what SHE spends, and you both will be limited to what's in the account without thinking (wrongly) that the other can bail you out if you get into trouble. When there's problems with money in a marriage, it spreads to everything else. It's a fricking hydra. Make sure you have this talk. Feelings be damned. If she starts whining over this talk before marriage, you are headed for the poor house after marriage. Heed those words, laddie.

Do you have a joint account for bills, groceries, vacations, etc.? And then each your own account for personal purchases?
