| What are the PTs thoughts on implementing smart gun technology? (Posted on 1/18/13 at 8:37 am)
quote:
The Smart Gun or Personalized Gun is a concept gun that aims to reduce the misuse of guns through the use of RFID chips or other proximity devices, fingerprint recognition, or magnetic rings. Only magnetic devices are readily available.
Basically, the gun would use biometric sensors to detect whether the owner or a non-authorized user is handling it. I know we are a long way off from this being an implementable solution. Thoughts?

If it was anywhere near feasible, would be a good system... As long as it was private and not tied to some national database.

So, like Bond's new Walter PPK 7? I'd be down to have one if there was no possibility of it actually being tracked.

I could go for something like that as long as no gps like technology is used.

That's really the key isn't it? They came out with bracelets a few years ago. Great idea, but what if somebody breaks into your house and you can't find your bracelet? Same thing w/ bio-metrics. What happens when somebody (with the system) gets killed b/c it didn't work right. It would be awesome if they could get it right though. Gradually (maybe over a century) we could remove guns from the hands of criminals.

It would probably help with recovering stolen weapons but do little to reduce crime. Similar but different to Obama's plan. Nothing he has done will have any effect on criminals using weapons for mayhem.

Not necessarily opposed to it, but how would my kids be able to use my rifles for deer hunting with that type of technology. (Finger print technology). Don't know enough about the technology to understand how it would work.

If they could tie the ammo to this I would think they could have the intended effects much quicker

That is some Judge Dredd shite right there. Very much against anything like that since registration would be included as well.

I would have to be 100% certain the gun will function in a crisis. I want it to be customizable so that my family can all use it in a crisis - 100% of the time.

That would have to be a stipulation, imo.

They could probably use GPS to prevent the gun from firing in a gun free zone. They will think of this soon.
