quote:
1988 report by the Violence Policy Center, an anti-gun lobby: “[H]andgun restriction is simply not viewed as a priority. Assault weapons...are a new topic. The weapons' menacing looks, coupled with the public's confusion over fully automatic machine guns versus semi-automatic assault weapons—anything that looks like a machine gun is assumed to be a machine gun—can only increase the chance of public support for restrictions on these weapons. ”
quote:
Washington Post editorial published two days later was candid about the ban's real purpose: “[N]o one should have any illusions about what was accomplished [by the ban]. Assault weapons play a part in only a small percentage of crime. The provision is mainly symbolic; its virtue will be if it turns out to be, as hoped, a stepping stone to broader gun control. ”
These say it all. Gun control is not about protecting kids or anyone else. It's a leftist agenda, plain and simple.

I disagree, I believe people other than leftists are supporting gun control because they are genuine in their concerns for kids and the general population. But a lot of these people are ignorant of the real issues here, and they wouldn't know a machine gun from a semi automatic rifle. Educating these people is important to win the public relations war because I think these people also want some measure of self defense because they know govt. can't always protect them and their loved ones. I think everybody here agrees that if there is away to prevent another Newton, Aurora, or Fort Hood and not enfringe on a person's right to keep and bear arms; we'd support it.

True, but see the first quote. The left is taking advantage of misinformation and misconceptions and perpetuating them. To me, that's the leftist agenda. I agree that people need to be educated. I educated 2 conservatives and 1 dem this week. They all thought "assault" rifle meant "fully automatic."

From the link: According to the Department of Justice, the firearms that the AssaultWeaponsBan would ban were used in only 2% of all gun crimes.

This is my take: Assault rifle is a term that applies to WHO is to use a rifle, and what they intend to do with the rifle. So, an assault rifle is used by an assaulter. A hunting rifle is used by a hunter. If an assaulter uses the hunters rifle to commit assault, that rifle is an assault rifle. I don't care how many trigger pulls are required to commit the act. If you truly believe that a gun does not shoot people, and that only people shoot people, then the term assault rifle cannot be possible. Rifles do not assault. Perhaps "assaulter" should be applied to the shooter his/her self. This would greatly reduce the need for frivolous legislation. A common argument is that military style rifles are specifically designed for assault, thus they have no home defense/recreational/hunting uses. This is completely false and beyond simply being false it implies that the 2nd amendment has anything to do with hunting, sporting, or self defense. From this common argument I have made some conclusions: 1. Military rifles (Garand, M1A, M16, M4) have served the purposes of assault as well as defense for as long as firearms have replaced pikes and spears. The Infantry frequently assault with the m4, but I dare say that more frequently the M4 is carried by clerks and cooks for the purpose of personal and base defense. So is the m4 an assault rifle or a defense rifle? It seems as though the definition changes with the user, and what the user's intention happens to be. 2. Arguing over the definition of assault weapon or assault rifle comes off as admitting that if such a gun could be proven to be an "assault rifle" that normal Americans should not be able to own it or that ownership should incur a tax or penalty to limit individual access to an "assault rifle". If you believe that the 2nd amendment was established to allow citizens of the U.S. to maintain a "free state", then you should, in my opinion, support the common proliferation of firearms that could reasonable be used in an assault. In my opinion this extends to include automatic weapons. Thus I disagree with the methods used in the presentation which, perhaps unintentionally, suggests that owning a fully automatic m4 is unreasonable because of how many trigger pulls are required to fire x number of rounds.

The general public is very uneducated on the specifics of guns/firearms. There are a lot of liberals who think the guns that were used in aurora and newton were automatic rifles or "assault weapons" I've done a good bit of educating this week myself.

Why do people continually discount the advantage of a pistol grip in certain situations?

Sure, there are numerous other advantages though. So to say the only difference is the color is deceitful and incorrect.
