The biggest problem, imo with all college fans, is that they start to view the games as some sort of business product.

This. I see that MOST often with those that have never attended the university or really don't care for LSU athletics other than bragging rights to their friends and relatives. The same guys who post shite like "thats not what my tax dollars go to" when posting about university athletics.

But it's not. How much you choose to spend is irrelevant. Of course, you want to see the team have a ton of success, but I'll still go out of my way to support the team and the university. That isn't conditional.

If fans don't put pressure on the team with their money, LSU will invest the bare minimum in the quality of the product on the court.

That's very noble, but I assure you that Joe Alleva only cares about our moral support insomuch as it makes us do illogical things like buy LSU basketball season tickets even though the team has been consistently unwatchable for years.

JOB3 then peeled out to the top of the key, received a pass and took the open three which he missed as time expired.

We maybe could have gotten a worse look out of that if we tried....but that's the only way.

quote:

LSU was never able to get it going in overtime and ended the game down nine.

For all of the how hard we've played and how much effort we've given all year statements, that overtime was the antiithisis of that. We mailed that O.T. in other than Hickey, whose always high energy if not always thought out.

quote:

LSU was plagued with foul trouble. Johnny O'Bryant fouled out, and Charles Carmouche, Anthony Hickey, Andre Stringer, and Shavon Coleman ended the game with 4 each. Johnny O'Bryant and Anthony Hickey each had their 4th with more than 8:00 minutes left in regulation. Shavon Coleman picked up two early first half fouls in less than 10 seconds. Without LSU's best players on the floor, they weren't able to extend their lead, which they had most of the game.

USC was supposed to be the team that had issues with fouling too much. They were right up there in all the measurable categories in that regard....yet here we were setting the table they had been heretofore setting.

quote:

While LSU had opportunities to win the game, it was lost with turnovers.
That's been our M.O. most of the year.
quote:

After being nearly non-existent playing less than 10 minutes in 4 of the 5 previous games, Malik Morgan has really shown up the lat two games. Last night, he had 27 minutes, 7 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 0 turnovers

Morgan's been there on defense from jump. If he gives us anything at all on offense he needs to play that 27 minutes or more.

We've already blown 2 winnable games on our schedule in the SEC. We can talk about all the recruiting rankings we want to, but I've been down that road before.

Dale and Brady both put multiple top 10 recruitng classes on the board with varied success, more often not leading to quite the success we expected.

I've traveled this road enough. I'm too old and too frickin' tired to count on what might be.

I just want to get the most out of what we can be with what we have every year. We ain't getting that right now. I'll stay open to the possibility that this can still happen this year and beyond.

But I ain't gonna blow sunshine when I'm seeing crap and it's been crap the last 5 games.

When I see something to blow sunshine, then I'll start blowing sunshine.

Please start showing me something Johnny. I want so much to hang my hat on but you gotta give me something.

The last 5 games ain't gettin it.

We had a lot of shots go in and out last night (or at least that is what it seemed like watching from the cheap seats) so that was frustrating

That's what I saw too Fratastic. Yeah we had some calls go against us but that's life. We had some shots go down that we ain't gonna get in most games so IMHO that balanced out.

When the "cavalry" comes in next year we still have some things to clean up. Cause I've seen some of Dale's more talented teams, with CJJ on the bench, put some pretty inconsistent years on the board.

I just want my basketball team to play reasonably to their capabilities. That's all I want.

It ain't happening of late. Believe me I'll be thrilled if we can get there. But I am not going to accept it will be until I see it.

I've seen too much more of the other.

What do you think they are capable of specifically, as is?

Beating South Carolina and not letting the game get as out of hand as it did in the second half at Auburn.

And I don't think honestly that's expecting a whole lot.

Amos, I'll jump on the bandwagon as quick as anyone, but I need a reason.

And hell, I'll jump on next year if the cavalry is as good as advertiesed but I'm not throwing boquets for crap, and that's what we've gotten the last 5 games.

And believe me, there ain't no one on this board who wants it more than me in basketball. Maybe a few who want it as much but none who want it more.

You will jump on soon. If you look at Johnny's record at North Texas, his teams got hot at the end of the season and played their best basketball in the conference tourney. I think his record in the Sun Belt tourney was like 15-4 or something like that.

Thanks for that FamousA.
I was hoping that the negative posters on TigerDroppings weren't the main fan base talking.
I'll take what is posted with a pinch of salt from now on.
I've been an LSU bball fan for 6 years now, since the season before I actually moved here from Canada 5 years ago. I've only just started posting on TDpings, and was getting a bit dispirited by what was written.

I don't doubt you at all, I think you are a pretty reasonable, conservative fan

I try not to make excuses but I kind of look at like this. Boise State, and Marquette just played better. Point blank. No excuses or defending that. I doubt having Hickey in the entire game against Boise would have made a difference.

I'm having a hard time accepting the Auburn and South Carolina games though. I almost feel like they were black swan in nature, with Carmouche forgetting how to play basketball on a junior high level against Auburn, and Collins doing the same against South Carolina alongside Hickey, JOB's foul troubles. I'd be shocked to see these types of things happen consistently from here on out (minus JOB's fouls)

In any case, you are warranted in your views, and at some point, these young guys (and experienced vets) have to shake off the inconsistency and simply get it done.

I'm not really speaking in the same terms for the administration. Obviously, you want them to have great teams and win championships, but there are other ways to send that message. You don't have ignore it, thus ignoring the kids donning the uniform and representing the school, until you become interested.

Season ticket sales are really not as big as you'd think. What the AD really wants is those TAF donations. They will dry up when the teams start to suck. What I'm saying isn't entirely realistic, but I still think there you can push for better performance out of the teams while not ridiculing them.

LSU football is definitely a business product - big business - and is marketed accordingly. I don't see LSU bball as quite the same thing. One day maybe.

re: LSU 73 vs South Carolina 82 - Recap

I was really wringing my hands at last night's game (LSU bball lover, though I am).

I just felt that Anthony wasn't on his game last night. I know he had some good stats, but he had 4 or 5 turnovers, which is really uncharacteristic. He has a good assist to turnover ratio up to now. He just looked a bit slow.

Did anybody else feel that way?

I think Ellington got in his head to some degree, because Ellington was just as fast and probably more agile. I don't think Anthony has faced anyone that mirrored his abilities and style as Ellington did, for a long time, if ever. It was difficult to press against him (Ellington) and the SC collapsing defense. So I think that's why Johnny didn't go to the press.

I don't know if anyone else noticed, but at times Hickey just seemed tentative at running the point. When he made some threes and lay-ups and got the crowd pumped he livened up, but overall I think he was a bit sub-par.
Maybe even he gets fed-up that with all his feeds/passes going nowhere except clanging off the rim, and his patient waiting for play set-up only to have the wrong guy in the wrong position as seconds wind down!

And playing with 4 fouls (some of them really stupid calls, but don't get me started on the refereeing) cramps his style. He can't be as aggressive, steals are gonna be called fouls.

Game loss isn't on Anthony, he played well in other ways. But I think Ellington and foul troubles took his game away last night.

He was too rushed early in the game. He had the 2 traveling calls early and a dumb turnover to not travel while running down the court faster than he probably should have. Definitely not his best game, but he calmed down and played better in the second half.

I would love to see it tgr4ever. But I'm gonna need to see it before jumping. And I ain't seeing close to it yet.

I'm not jumping on hope and change. I'll jump on playing to our capability and maybe even overachieving a bit, which ain't happening now.
