| Why does the SEC have a difficult time with bball? (Posted on 1/17/13 at 6:31 pm)
Spare me the Florida and UK talk. Yes the national champ has come out of the SEC quite a bit the last decade or so, but lets be honest, this is not an indicator of the relative strength of the overall conference. The SEC is behind and I really have no explanation for it. The South has plenty of talent but yet they flock to other conferences. Sure, winning breeds winning and better recruiting....but I see a parallel to football: put your money where your mouth is and good will follow. Hire good coaching, upgrade facilities and get people into the arena. Is the SEC just not doing enough in this regard? Like student recruiting, I have to think that big household names like LSU or Bama has to be a nice draw for a basketball recruit. Maybe not?

All of the big time athlete's focus on football from the beginning. Many play bball through HS, but very very few likely forego football scholly's to play college basketball.

As of late, this hasn't been completely true. For the most part though, there have been some coaching hires that haven't lived up to the hype.

i think it goes back to demographics and population. the population centers of the midwest/northeast could produce more football players if they could play year round. basketball can be, and is, and it's population is higher there elite basketball requires super freaks producing super freaks requires a very large population. they gots da people to do it also, their higher like of basketball means more schools with history/facilities to attract recruits. those schools with that history pay more to maintain that history. we pay more for our FB coaches

Kids want to play basketball on a campus where that sport is a religion. If you play basketball at LSU, Alabama, UGA, Auburn, etc you are playing at a school where your sport is not as highly regarded as football. The elite kids are being recruited by Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke, Syracuse, UCLA, Indiana etc where they will be kings instead of princes

Not to mention some of the SEC schools put baseball in front of basketball.

A lot of folks are talking about comparisons/contrasts among the elite teams...the Kentucky's, the UNC's, the Dukes, the UCLAs, etc. But what about the mid to lower tier teams? What does UGA do differently than let's say Iowa basketball? Is SFP's post really all it is? That the fans, alumni, and school put a higher percentage of effort and dollars towards basketball than football? The higher populace areas will produce the elite players (and the less elite players will go to the mid to lower tier schools in those conferences)?

I will NEVER GET THIS. But I think BBALL is a winter sport and the teams to the north have a HUGE advantadge in thus area. look at at goegraphics. In the Northeast... that's all they care about. In Kentuckey and Indiana, that's ALL they know.

It isn't a demographic issue IMO - the basketball schools are scattered all over the country and schools like Kansas, Kentucky, Duke, and Syracuse (in upstate New York) are not basketball powerhouses because they are in more urban areas. Those schools can land players from all over the country because they are known for being schools where basketball is #1 and known for winning national championships. The demographics of the ACC and SEC are highly similar - one is a football conference for the most part and one is a basketball conference for the most part

Yeah, I'd be interested to see the $'s on average spent on basketball and the $'s on average spent on baseball in the SEC ETA: My intuition tells me that basketball is still emphasized over baseball in the SEC
