| Political Media Without Sensationalism - Is There Any? (Posted on 1/17/13 at 4:49 pm)
I just want cold hard facts to form my own opinion. Are there any media outlets the OT reccomends? Wiki on sensationalism: "Some tactics include being deliberately obtuse, appealing to emotions, being controversial, intentionally omitting facts and information, being loud, self-centered and acting to obtain attention. Trivial information and events are sometimes misrepresented and exaggerated as important or significant, and often includes stories about the actions of individuals and small groups of people, the content of which is often insignificant and irrelevant relative to the macro-level day-to-day events that occur globally." Update: Not trying to discuss party bias in media. That is a well discussed topic. Regardless of party I'm looking for a media outlet with journalistic integrity to refrain from using the things in the above definition.

I took journalism classes in college, and it seems to me that modern day journalism is all about creating news rather than reporting news Hence why Rush Limbaugh calls them the drive by media

What are you trying to consume? Print or radio/television? If it's the latter, good luck. NPR and BBC worldwide are the closest you'll find, but that's just radio. TV news.. that's fricked.

You actually think NPR and BBC are centrist?

He is very sensational and exactly the kind of media I'd like to avoid. But thats another thread. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I have a B.A. in journalism and yes, that is true to a certain extent. But to think in the first place that there is, or should be, such a thing as completely unbiased news reporting is silly and misguided. You cannot honestly expect journalist to be unopinionated empty suits who have no belief system. That's just not reasonable. What you can and should expect is for news outlets to hire professionals who understand what their job is. And even still, I enjoy the slightly obvious bias of some publications. I like a little injection of opinion and perspective put into a piece. It makes reading more interesting and more personal. If you want seriously want "just the facts" it's pretty easy to go to a courthouse or library or city council meeting.

Moreso than say, MSNBC. Yeah. Who in your opinion is the most centrist widely available outlet these days?

How about being fair and applying the same standards to left and right?

The amount of newspapers that don't do this is very exaggerated. Mostly by the right.

I'd prefer not to go down that well discussed path. Regardless of party slant you don't have to be sensational.
