Well, that sucks.
I presumed Vilma would ultimately lose based on the difficulty of obtaining such a verdict (especally since Vilma is a public figure)...but I had hoped discovery would go forward. I'm convinced that was Vilma's goal in bringing the suit to begin with.

Always tough to prove actual malice against public figures, and after Tags threw out the suspensions, there weren't even any real damages.
No surprise here.
But this certainly isn't an endorsement of anything Goodell did.
In fact, she pretty much said the process was unfair and Goodell acted improperly.
Just didn't rise to the level of actionable damages.

While the ruling is disappointing, it's not surprising given the CBA and labor law. However, Vilma doesn't walk away empty-handed here.
By not throwing out the case immediately and by openly stating early on deep concerns she had with how RG handled this matter, Berrigan kept the spectre of discovery and a trial alive. I think this more than anything scared the league and I have to believe it had a role in RG's decision to name Tags as the arbitrator, which ultimately kept Vilma on the field and getting his paychecks.
It also kept this matter in the media and the public eye in a way Goodell probably didn't want. It gave an opportunity for guys like Florio to take a more critical look and expose the league's hypocrisy and dishonesty on the matter.
Vilma can also point to statements Berrigan made that the reason for the dismissal was technical, and that he otherwise had potential claims against RG, namely, that he was defamed. In the end I think some good came of this for Vilma while at the same time roughing up Goodell just a little.
