In addition to being the last man I think he also has to deny the opposing player a clear goal scoring oppurtunity. I think that part of the equation is what kept Smalling on the pitch.

Today was 1st Match I was able to sit and watch for a while and wow what a match ... Love how the damn light went off right before half lol!! Can't wait for UCL round of 16 to start!! I think we will handle Madrid pretty easily!!
