LSU 73 vs South Carolina 82 - Recap

LSU (9-5,0-3) came into the game confident that they could get their offense back after two straight poor performances. South Carolina (11-5,1-2) came in knowing they had lost two SEC games by a combined 5 points and were ready to take that step into the victory column. While LSU was able to score 73 points in the overtime thriller, South Carolina came out on top 82-73.

Tied at 69 with the shot clock off, LSU had a chance to win this one in regulation. Anthony Hickey held the ball to make sure the Tigers got the last shot, and had a screen set by Johnny O'Bryant. JOB3 then peeled out to the top of the key, received a pass and took the open three which he missed as time expired. LSU was never able to get it going in overtime and ended the game down nine.

LSU was plagued with foul trouble. Johnny O'Bryant fouled out, and Charles Carmouche, Anthony Hickey, Andre Stringer, and Shavon Coleman ended the game with 4 each. Johnny O'Bryant and Anthony Hickey each had their 4th with more than 8:00 minutes left in regulation. Shavon Coleman picked up two early first half fouls in less than 10 seconds. Without LSU's best players on the floor, they weren't able to extend their lead, which they had most of the game.

While LSU had opportunities to win the game, it was lost with turnovers. Just four days after LSU had a season low 8 turnovers against #10 Florida, the Tigers go out and give up a season high 22. LSU out rebounded South Carolina by 4 and made 13 of 16 free throws but still couldn't get the victory. LSU has yet to put it all together in SEC play and it shows with the 0-3 record. While there were certainly mistakes, there were some positive spots as well.

After being nearly non-existent playing less than 10 minutes in 4 of the 5 previous games, Malik Morgan has really shown up the lat two games. Last night, he had 27 minutes, 7 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 0 turnovers, 2 steals and a block. He ran the court well and was a menace on defense. Charles Carmouche finally found his shot again and had 13 points on only 6 field goal attempts. He was 3 of 5 from beyond the arc and added 4/4 free throws. He also had a game high 5 assists and only 2 turnovers.

Corban Collins turned in the worst performance of the season as he finished the game with 7 minutes, 2 points, and 4 turnovers. After picking his game up, he has had 3 consecutive poor performances. Carmouche led the Tigers in unadjusted SoS, while Malik Morgan led LSU with a very respectable 41.37 Adjusted SoS. Hickey's stat line is impressive with the 18 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals, but his season high 5 turnovers really hurt him and the team in this one.

The stats show how close this game was with the closest SoS ratings yet this year, only a 2.59 difference. Besides the obvious turnover difference, LSU's bench was also outscored 53-17, led by South Carolina's Michael Carrera's game high 23 points. He came into the game with South Carolina's highest Adjusted SoS at just over 46. He finished this game with Unadj SoS of 43.25 and an Adj SoS of 67.72 and a double double.

The loss really puts a damper on LSU's season prospects. With this being one of their easier match-ups, it doesn't bode well for the rest of the season. LSU had way more mental mistakes in this one than anyone could have expected, and they lost LSU the game.

Season Prediction:
16-13, (7-11)

That was a tough game to watch last night. It was very frustrating. I thought some of the whistles lately against LSU have been a little overboard. Patric Young was fouling the shite out of JOB the other night and was barely getting whistled. Every time LSU touches an opposing player, it's a fricking whistle. I know we have had some stupid fouls, and JOB has led the way with dumb fouls, but we could use a break or two to go our way.

I hate to say the game is ever on the refs, but they certainly didn't help us out last night. A few very questionable calls IMO that really changed the outcome of the game. LSU has to learn how to fight through that.

Forget NIT this year. Expectations are way to high for this team.

Yea I am starting to feel this way as well. I was really hopeful that we could pull out a NIT trip and end up middle of the pack in the SEC, but we aren't getting the brakes that we need in each game.

We had a lot of shots go in and out last night (or at least that is what it seemed like watching from the cheap seats) so that was frustrating. We have to find a way to get to the line more in a game like last night where ever touch is a foul, especially in the second half. That was a disappointing loss.

Agree we didn't catch a break last night. I thought we looked good in spurts. Obviously the fouls really hurt us. I just don't understand why we can't get fouled.

Sorry but your 7 SEC wins is a bit over optimistic. This team is not there mentally.

A number of factors at play in this loss.

The fouls, the turnovers, Collins , Hickey just barely missing threes in the clutch...

Consider these stats.

Bench Points
USCe - 53
LSU - 17

2nd Chance Points
USCe - 12
LSU - 7

LSU with only 4 fast break points.

Until the team IS there mentally, LSU fans will not be there physically. The PMAC is going to be sparsely populated until something happens to put people back into the seats. Doubt if that happens this year. Talent not there yet, but some of these coaching glitches are not a welcome thing to see. Jones needs to reign in JOB, get him under control or sit him on the bench. Fans will just have to grin and bear it for now. There should be major improvement with the class coming in, but LSU basketball fans have been hearing "Wait till next year" for far too long and are just about out of patience.

Dumbest statement of the year nomination...

Dude, we were left with very little, and Coach Jones is doing what he can. Next season there is a top 10 recruiting class coming in. That is huge in basketball where freshman contribute more than in football.

This is Coach Jones' first year as coach and he has brought some excitement back to the PMAC early, but the team just barely lost to SC at home and @Aub. Next year, we should be in contention for the NCAA tourney. To say you've heard "next year" for too long doesn't apply when this time there is actually reason to believe it.

Im really starting to get tired of this fanbase and their ridiculous pessimism. shite. /rant

So beating SWAC schools brings excitement?

Which basically means that we are one of the worst teams in the SEC.

I hope so, but until LSU proves that they can beat quality teams, expect to see more total attendance figures of 2,000 and less.

I think the pessimism is justified after we lose to the 2nd or 3rd worst team in the SEC at home. This team has enough talent that we should expect to win this sort of game.

I've seen nothing to suggest this. At the current rate, we'll be lucky to get 5 SEC wins this season. The vast majority of freshmen can't turn a team around like that.

Those wanting to "fire Jones" or are upset that he doesn't have LSU competing for an SEC title this year are ridiculous. That said, Jones should not be above criticism for this team's conf. start. While they certainly may not end the season that way, you'd have to rank LSU last (or at minimum next to last) in the SEC at this point in the season.

A reasonable fan could understand the AU loss - First SEC road game against a team that was playing pretty well. (Although you would have liked them to be more competitive in the 2nd half)

A reasonable fan could also live with the UF loss - The best or second best team in the conf. (Although again, you'd have liked them to be more competitive)

It's hard to really be accepting of last night's loss though. At home, against a team that may be as, but is definitely not MORE talented than you. Frank Martin puts an emphasis on toughness and defense, and USC did defend marginally well, but there were times where LSU looked absolutely clueless as to how to create an open look. (Also, the 20+ TO's didn't help)

*One bright spot, they did shoot FT well last night.

Don't tell Kentucky that.

Now, I'm not sure we will have "Kentucky-type" freshmen coming in, but this recruiting class is being built up as a top ten/top five recruiting class in the nation.

Time will tell.

i am definitely optimistic about the future of LSU bball under CJJ, but am a little baffled by some of his in game decisions...

am i the only one that was wanting CJJ to call time out and set up a play after LSU stole the ball from uSC and had the last shot in regulation???

How's that working for them this year?

Kentucky is different because they get the cream of the crop every year. Our top 10 class is made up of a lot of good players. Also, Kentucky never starts with a team as bad as ours is now.

I agree that the loss was bad. Very bad. I thought it was a must win. Well, we didn't. But I think once the team puts it all together, the squad has a great opportunity to be solid. I don't think it's a coaching issue at all.

We had 22 turnovers last night. 22. Any team who puts up 22 turnovers are gonna have a tough time winning, still, we had a shot at the end of the game to win.

I just don't understand why people are putting this on the coach. I think he did a very good job last night on a night where we had butter fingers and foul trouble. If anything, I was happily surprised that we held the game in check after both hickey and JOB went out with 4 fouls with over 8 left in the game.

And for those who wanted him to call a timeout at the end of the regulation period, why? Do you not think LSU had practiced that situation 10000 times before? Because they have. No reason to let USC setup a defense. I didn't like the shot, but I didn't mind Jones putting the ball in Hickeys hands to do what he pleased.

I understand the criticism, but I think many are aimlessly blaming the coach on a game where he actually did a good job with the rotation (given the fouls). We have a few less turnovers which isnt unreasonable, 22 is a season high, and we win that game.
