Public school teaches about "white privilege"

Tax dollars at work. LINK

They might as well have a class "blacks are victims".

It is a stupid use of tax payer money. Social engineering. Teach the 3rs and be done with it.

Ehh, probably doesn't need to be in a high school curriculum, I'll agree with that. American history, including our nation's not-so-shining moments should be, though.

The quotes around "white privilege" in your title, is that meant to imply white privilege doesn't exist/hasn't existed? Or just a direct quote from the link you've shared?

"Political Correctness" was originally codified, more or less in the current academic form, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, after an effort spearheaded by Donna Shalala.

This story is literally no surprise to me.

It is just a quote from the link.

I don't deny most whites have had easier lives in the USA because they were born white as opposed to some other color but skin color is not an excuse for failing to achieve or to care for oneself nor is it a reason one color group should feel an obligation to bestow charity or special privilege on another group of people.

Government certainly should be color blind.

I wonder if we consider government hand outs as privilege which racial group on a per capita basis is most privileged?

I didn't realize that when white people give their earned money to black people who chose not to work is being oppressive. Maybe white people should stop paying them and we will no longer be oppressors.

He also suggested that propaganda about white privilege can improve critical-thinking skills.

“There are a lot of radical people in our country and across the world,” he said, according to the Mail. “They need to be ideally attuned to some of the different thought patterns that different cultures may have.

Sounds like a cry for help. What Wisconsin has been really good at over the years is pointing fingers at others for race relations. What Wisconsin has not been so good at is having a diverse culture, and practicing cultural diversity because of their Lilly white culture. They're really good at lab work, just not so experienced in practical application. Thus, a cry for help.

From one of the whitest states in the country, the center of the black polulation there is Milwaukee. A uncle by marriage from the state saw his first black man at eighteen while being drafted into the Army. He is one of the most racist men I have ever met in my life.

This is dumb. I guess I should go to a Walmart in a predominitely black neighborhood and count the dolls too. If their are more black dolls than white then that Walmart would have to be racist.

Agreed 100%

I can understand this line of reasoning, but let me play devil's advocate here for debate's sake. If you already acknowledged:
quote:

most whites have had easier lives in the USA because they were born white as opposed to some other color

the couldn't one argue that government aid isn't "black privilege" just like if an individual suffered a debilitating spinal chord injury in the past, and now gets to move around in an electric wheel chair while the rest of us have to walk around and get tired isn't a "privilege" or advantage.

Not a perfect analogy by any stretch, admittedly, and I'm sure many on here will attack its shortcomings. But do u kind of see the point I am trying to make?

You just nailed it.

My wife was up there a while back and said the same thing. All week she heard the locals making racist comments, etc. It was about day four when they discovered she was from the south (she was at a conference with hundreds of people). As soon as they found out she was from the South, one of the most racist idiots she met actually told her she was racist and "most likely voted republican" simply bc she was from LA.

My nieve wife just left the convo alone and walked away. I was proud of her for not engaging the idiot.

How many white people up in here got 'start up money'?

Was in a college class when white privilege came up. Asked for an example a black girl said "Whites get start up money."

Me: "What's that?"
Her: "When whites get married their parents give them 20 thousand dollars as start up money."

Prof: "How many of you have heard of this start up money?"

No white hands went up. All the blacks raised their hands.

PS, I didn't get any.

perhaps start up money is a euphemism, for things like average intelligence, a relatively stable family environment, respect for literacy, some support in academic achievement and general socialization?

Easier to just say "start up money".

This is the only that a discussion around privilege should contain. It is very relevant and many people can't fathom, especially in a small rural community, how the hit the fricking jackpot by being white, and born in america. Understanding how lucky you are is a good thing, and gives good perspective.

If the discussion moves to, what we should do about it, then its out of line IMHO. But the reality is that if you are born white, to two loving parents and are middle class or higher, your chances of success in america, or really anywhere in america, skyrocket. The middle class and two loving parents are probably better indicators BUT being white certainly does have its advantages.

Most likely BS anecdotal evidence to paint the "black girl" as ignorant, typical.

From the age of 20-25, I easily got $20k+ from my family....from college graduation, grad school and a wedding, I easily cleared that. And it made a big difference in my life.

Now, I didn't get shite for college from my parents. But graduation and wedding, I cleaned the frick up.
