He destroys damn near any guitarist of this generation. I've been playing guitar since I was a child, and his guitar playing alone makes me respect him along with being a fan. He belongs in a class with Trucks, Frusciante, Bonamassa, Jack White, and a handful of others for the best.
While I agree that all of the guitarists you mentioned are fantastic, there's a significant list that belongs up there with them. Popularity is not an indicator of talent. Fredrik Thordendal, Devin Townsend, Ian Williams, Spencer Seim, DP Holmes, Chris Letchford, Daniel Johns, Mikael Akerfeldt, and on. He's definitely talented. I just think people get carried away with pedestals.
