Which have to be significantly amped up every year in order to maintain the same yield, which results in higher cost every year, and a lack of earth worms, and you're wrong. Truth is, traditional farming methods are proven to produce as high a yield or greater. The reason you don't see more of it is because of the cost to the farmer in reverting back to those techniques over a 3-5 year period. Most would love to do it, but they can't afford to take the hit short term. It's a system they've all become addicted to.

The common assumption these days is that we muster our weapons to secure oil, not food. There's a little joke in this. Ever since we ran out of arable land, food is oil. Every single calorie we eat is backed by at least a calorie of oil, more like ten. In 1940 the average farm in the United States produced 2.3 calories of food energy for every calorie of fossil energy it used. By 1974 (the last year in which anyone looked closely at this issue), that ratio was 1:1. And this understates the problem, because at the same time that there is more oil in our food there is less oil in our oil. A couple of generations ago we spent a lot less energy drilling, pumping, and distributing than we do now. In the 1940s we got about 100 barrels of oil back for every barrel of oil we spent getting it. Today each barrel invested in the process returns only ten, a calculation that no doubt fails to include the fuel burned by the Hummers and Blackhawks we use to maintain access to the oil in Iraq.
...
Food is politics. That being the case, I voted twice in 2002. The day after Election Day, in a truly dismal mood, I climbed the mountain behind my house and found a small herd of elk grazing native grasses in the morning sunlight. My respect for these creatures over the years has become great enough that on that morning I did not hesitate but went straight to my job, which was to rack a shell and drop one cow elk, my household's annual protein supply. I voted with my weapon of choice - an act not all that uncommon in this world, largely, I think, as a result of the way we grow food. I can see why it is catching on. Such a vote has a certain satisfying heft and finality about it. My particular bit of violence, though, is more satisfying, I think, than the rest of the globe's ordinary political mayhem. I used a rifle to opt out of an insane system. I killed, but then so did you when you bought that package of burger, even when you bought that package of tofu burger. I killed, then the rest of those elk went on, as did the grasses, the birds, the trees, the coyotes, mountain lions, and bugs, the fundamental productivity of an intact natural system, all of it went on.

It cannot be said how much of a benefit that is to shop at a place with reasonably intelligent and polite customer service, as well as having a plethora of choices. I think there's a place for the WHole Foods of the world. I still prefer to shop locally first or as much as I can given my options I have to pick from, but they do have a lot of things most locals don't have because of demand or lack thereof in local markets, but it's difficult to get specialized items from anywhere but there many times.

How about this one. Will this make you happy? They pay their staff higher hourly wages and provide more benefits to their employees than the majority of other grocery retailers do.

I sense a modicum of A Modest Proposal and Malthus in your statement. Maybe we would should let people starve to death for shits and giggles. An interesting article in the Jan 2012 National Geographic on the worlds population dealt with the area of the world necessary for the human race to occupy on the planet. The mass of the planet that was unneeded would make a damned fine source for both animal and plant life farming for humanity. Just to give you a clue, everyone on the planet could live in an area the size of Texas comfortably.

Seriously, I doubt very seriously many of the gun nuts shop at Whole Foods anyway.

What are you trying to say?

Are you suggesting that those who shop at Whole Foods would lean left?

If so fine. But I guess they better research what the owner of Whole Foods thinks about their beloved POTUS. He recently called him a socialist and then changed it to him being a Fascist because of his Obamacare. I am sure all the left leaning sheeple who shop and work there are aware that their owner isn't one of them.

That's probably not as much the case as people think. A lot of Republicans shop at the ones in Metairie and Uptown N.O. (along with the lefties, of course).

Thanks WT. I skimmed over it. At first glance it looks really interesting. I've saved it for tonight's reading material.

May be not for long.

The owner of Whole Foods is apparently very upset about Obamacare and is going to chat to the media about the impact it is going to have on his business and the actions they are going to have to take. He went on to call Obama a Socialist and then changed that to Fascist.

I wonder if most of those who worked there were pro Obama?

Not saying that major cuts are coming, but he is going to have to make up the money somewhere.

Oh I agree with you on that. It was funny how Toddy made that jump.

I am in no way left leaning, and shop there because of the products they only offer. They are actually cheaper on some items.

Plus I think we are getting a Trader Joes. Apparently they are a little cheaper version, so maybe this will force them to bring down some of their costs.

I shop there on occasion, usually two or three times a month to get some products I can't find elsewhere.

Not really the same thing. But Trader Joe's is pretty cool. Where do you live? Are you talking about N.O.? Is that a serious possibility?

Baton Rouge. Hopefully they carry the things I am looking for. But it might drive some of WF prices down.

Listened to an excellent interview with him Tuesday on the radio. He's no friend of Obama. Has new book out about rehabbing the image of "big business". Interesting cat.

Right.

I'm tired of the ridiculous hyperbole.

. . . . such as "living wage," as opposed to $16/hr grocery store employees elsewhere.

First, I didn't use the phrase originally. I quoted another poster to say I agreed with the general intent of his post. I suppose I could have taken the time go back into the quote and revise the term "living wage", but, alas, I did not.

Bingo.

But for the rest of you that's cool. Keep shopping at Wal Mart so you can carry your gun (you're way more likely to need it there than a Whole Foods in Georgetown anyways).
