What I find interesting is that those three states produce the best football athletes and the best baseball athletes.

Largest populations as stated before. What's more interesting is to look at recruits per capita which Louisiana, Alabama, and Georgia have more I believe.

I glaced over the article and found it funny that they were trying to attribute the numbers to anything bu population size.

But not per capita. From a raw numbers standpoint, yes, but those states are full of big league football programs,too.
Louisiana and Mississippi are consistently very high, even in raw numbers - often 1 (or both) cracking the top 5 in Division I scholarship signings, despite having under 8 million people combined.
ETA: Both states consistently lead in number of NFL players produced per million people - greater than 17, which is incredible.
