Is it okay to question keeping Kragthorpe on staff?

I know he has his medical issues, and I have a TON of respect for Miles not just ditching him on the side of the street after that news came to light. But, at what point does LSU just need to move Kragthorpe into an administrative position in the Athletic Department?

This is purely a discussion on Kragthorpe's ability to coach QBs, not whether the Parkinson's Disease is limiting his coaching. I think he would step down completely if he thought his condition was making him a worse coach. Our QBs haven't gotten better in the 2 years under his tutelage.

When is it okay to say that he has failed at that, put him in an office somewhere so that LSU can continue to take care of his family, and give someone else a shot at working with our QBs? After next season if Mett doesn't show improvement in 2013? Now? How many years does a QB coach get to prove his worth?

As its been said numerous times, Kragthorpe is the least of our worries on the offensive side of the ball.

I think this is clearly wrong. I'm not sure how anyone can say that Mettenberger didn't get any better over the 2nd half of the year last year. When we did have problems, it was due to not protecting him in the pocket.

The argument against Kragthorpe is that if we hire another OC, we will also need to replace the OL coach. That means someone else has to go.

I like Mett a lot and think he has great potential. But, he was still overthrowing WRs, RBs, TEs and stuck in quick sand in the pocket the last half of the season.

He had a great game against Bama and then looked like he regressed.

I agree. He had Lee playing with a confidence that we had not seen from him for a majority of the season last year, until he crumbled under the pressure at bama.

Agree. Mett is still a work in progress. IMO at some point the game will slow down for him, then watch out.

It's going to be extremely difficult for Les to make a move at OC without Kragthorpe moving on. If Stud leaves on his own the market for an OC/OL coach is extremely thin. If Kragthorpe does move into an admin postion, it won't be long before Stud is gone.

He threw for over 1,000 yards (40% of his season total) in the month of November with a 61% completion percentage and 2:1 TD to INT ratio.

He absolutely improved.

Not to mention how instrumental Kragthorpe has been in recruiting QBs this year. Personally I think Krags is the best coach we have on the offensive side of the ball.

A QB coach can coach you but he can't make the actual throws during the game. At some point the QB has to be responsible.

I dont think Krag has been that bad. At one time, he was a pretty big dog for recruiting as well. Not sure if he is still doing so.

You said he didn't improve...not that he has room for improvement.

The premise of your argument is clearly wrong, IMO.

I think that Mett was severely limited by the injuries on the OL and having the worst WR core that we've had in probably 10 years. Despite all of that IMO, he did not improve as a QB during the season.

If you disagree and think that Kragthorpe has done well enough to keep his job, that's fine. I'm okay with people disagreeing with me.

I think that next year will probably be the real test in whether or not Kragthorpe is earning his paycheck. We should be able to tell really quickly (with a much more experienced OL and WR core) whether Mett has improved.

heres Metts year on paper.

(completions/attempts, TDs-Ints, total yards, qb rating)

North Texas - 19/26, 1-1, 192 yds, 140.1 qbr

Wash. - 12/18, 1-0, 195 yds, 176.0 qbr

Idaho - 17/22, 2-1, 222 yds, 182.9 qbr

Auburn - 15/27, 0-0, 169 yds, 108.1 qbr

Townson - 15/26, 2-0, 238 yds, 160 qbr

Florida - 11/25, 0-1, 158 yds, 89.1 qbr

Scar - 12/25, 0-1, 148 yds, 89.7 qbr

A&M - 11/29, 1-0, 97 yds, 77.4 qbr

bama - 24/35, 1-0, 298 yds, 149.5 qbr

Miss St. - 19/30, 2-0, 273 yds, 161.8 qbr

Ole Miss - 22/37, 0-2, 282 yds, 112.7 qbr

Ark - 16/29, 1-0, 217 yards, 129.4 qbr

he started pretty well but definitely struggled when he got into SEC play and when the OL was in such disaray, but the fact that he bounced back so strong, and that it began against bama, the biggest game of his life against a very good defense, I think says a lot about Metts mental toughness and what Krag can do as a QB coach.

Lets sit back and see how krag can develop retting and Jennings. That will give us a good idea. Mett, lee, jj, were all coached by sub par coaches before krag got a hold of them.

You show me an LSU fan who doesn't appreciate Krag and I'll show you an LSU fan that doesn't read much about recruiting. Fitting, considering Rettig starts his LSU career today.

I understood your point, and i wholeheartedly disagree with it.

What people aren't talking about is that Mettenberger went though a season (getting hit and getting pressured as much as he did) that has been known to cause lingering effects on a QB. The fact that he continued to stand in the pocket the way that he did is a testament to him and the coaching that he has received.

Well Krag's only been here 2 years, so why are you suggesting getting rid of him?

Also looking at stats, how can you not see that Mett improved and was one of the best QBs in the SEC in the last month of the season.

re: Is it okay to question keeping Kragthorpe on staff?

I think Kragthorpe has done a good job. The best case scenario would be to hire a new OC, new OL coach, and move Ensminger to an admin role.

However, the reality is that if someone is going to come in and take control, it's very possible that someone is going to want control over the QB responsibilities.
