Can you fill me in on this one? The famous gif from this movie has always freaked me out and the premise sounds pretty creepy
It's definitely pretty creepy. It's basically presented in "found footage" fashion...literally...as in they (cops) raid a house in NY one day and find hundreds and hundreds of tapes that some dude recorded. Some of the tapes are of him visiting potential victims (ranging from children to adults), some of him torturing them, and some of him murdering them. And he kinda toys with police here and there too. So the whole thing is basically home video footage of a serial killer who is actually really good at what he does. The tapes are definitely creepy, especially when he visits children and manipulates them and whatnot. It's one of the better "this is real" movies I've seen, as most of the found footage-type movies at some point seem fake. This one is presented as completely true (even though it's completely fictional), and does an excellent job of selling that. Even the torture and murders look real. Only thing about this one is that it's not on DVD (and I assume not NF, though I have no idea). I watched it on youtube a year or two ago, but IIRC it got taken down at some point. So watching it may not be terribly easy...I'd just google "watch poughkeepsie tapes online" and start from there. shite like projectfreetv, 1channel, or ovguide may have it.

So these are left:
quote:
- The Possession - The Woman in Black (surprisingly solid) - Grave Encounters - The Crazies - Contagion (not horror but scary in its own right) - 30 Days of Night - Buried (not really horror) - The Poughkeepsie Tapes - The Covenant
My rank of how much I enjoyed them/how I'd recommend them: - 30 Days of Night - sort of a different take on vampires...really cool. - Crazies - has kind of a zombie feel. I'm not a huge Olyphant movie, but I like him in this. - Grave Encounters - Cool found footage movie about a reality show (similar to the Ghost Hunter shows) that investigates an abandoned insane asylum. Shenanigans ensue. - The Woman in Black - Been a while since I saw this one, but it's legit creepy, and shows that Daniel Radcliffe is better than soem of his HP acting. - Poughkeepsie Tapes - see above post, but it's definitely not for everybody. - Contagion - pretty realistic look at a worldwide outbreak of a deadly virus, but not exactly "horror." - The Possession - I like it because it actually has a decent ending, rather than something just thrown together stupidly. - The Covenant - if you liked Chronicle from last year, this is sort of like that, just not in a "found footage" presentation. I liked it. - Buried - not a horror, but more of an uncomfortable thriller. Ryan Reynolds is a worker overseas who is kidnapped and buried alive in a coffin. And that's the whole movie. It sounds stupid, but it works and he does a good job, and it's pretty fricking intense throughout. I rank it here more because it's not horror (and Contagion is better).

Thanks for starting this thread, OP. Been looking for a good horror flick. I'll add: The House of the Devil. Kind of a retro vibe, and slow build-up to a creepy finish. I liked it.

Also, this isn't as much a horror movie as it's kind of a monsterish/thriller movie, but Troll Hunter is awesome. Also, random note: Session 9 is a horror movie from 2001...it's not great, but I flipped the frick out when watching it because I finally knew where this David Caruso gif came from: Also, Them (2006) is a solid horror/thriller type. It's very similar to The Strangers, only better.

This isn't recent but I don't watch a lot of horror (that I would call good). The Ring.

Awesome movie. Haven't met a single person who hasn't liked it. Heard a lot about Session 9 and Them. Them is the one that seems to have a lot of creepy potential. Only thing is... SPOILERS Little kids as killers don't usually creep me out in any way. Now the same sort of scenario with teens or younger adults, like The Strangers or Funny Games, those tend to get under my skin for whatever reason

Yea that's a good one. Ti West is good at the slow build up thing, he directed The Innkeepers too

I've gotten a little tired of the found footage horror movies. Don't get me wrong, there are some really good ones out there, but it's kind of played out. With that said, VHS was good. In Their Skin was a good one. More of a thriller, but very good.

I was highly disappointed in it. It didn't suck, but I certainly didn't think it was very good.

After reading a lot of positive reviews for VHS I was hyped for it but I came away disappointed. Decent movie but not very scary

Freaked me the frick out. Especially since the next day I had to go to my grandmother's and climb in the attic to get her X-Mas decorations down. It was like when I saw Blair Witch in the theaters and had to go pick up my car after at my friends and drop his off. His family lived on a cow pasture. Completely dark with the sound of cows moving just out of eyesight. Imagination ran rampant. ETA: Plus, I hate little ghost kids.
