| Anyone Remember The Screamo/Hardcore Music Era? (Posted on 1/14/13 at 8:17 am)
Randomly came across a music video for The Used (from their first album, which is the only one by them I ever liked), and I felt some nostalgia. I decided that I'd start looking for a bunch of music from around that time period. Funny how much my taste has changed since this stuff was really popular, which is when I was about 14-16 years old. Always have been into older rock, blues, etc., but at one time I loved this stuff. Can't say the same anymore outside of a select few, but fun to listen to for a bit and remember the myspace music, purevolume, and fuse days. Took a while to search, but I compiled some videos that some might remember. The younger crowd might remember some of this stuff: Emery - Walls From First to Last - Ride The Wings of Pestilence (Singer is Skrillex) Underoath - It's Dangerous Business... Saosin - Bury Your Head (Not in this song or video, but when Anthony Green from Circa Survive was in this band they were much better) Thursday - Signals Over the Air He is Legend - Dinner With a Gypsy (This song is actually fricking awesome) The Blood Brothers - Love Rhymes With a Hideous Car Wreck The Bled - Last American Cowboy Bear vs Shark - Catamaran At the Drive-in - One Armed Scissor Will always love this one, and The Mars Volta as well. Alexisonfire - This Could Be Anywhere in the World (Dallas Green from City and Colour) Finch - What Is To Burn Thrice - Stare At the Sun Definitely evolved a lot since then. Armor For Sleep - Car Underwater Circa Survive Act Appalled Great band Mewithoutyou - January 1979 Glassjaw - Ape Dos Mil Classic The Receiving End of Sirens - Planning a Prison Break Feel free to contribute.

Not a huge fan of screamo, but a big fan of hardcore. I remember the first time I heard ATDI, I thought Fugazi had a new song. But I love the mid-80s HC scene. I lost all my Dischord vinyl in one of my moves, which totally sucks. HarDCore!

ATDI - Napoleon Solo I use to rock a lot Also listened to a band called Spitalfield quite a bit. Needless to say I've grown out of all of that.

Back in the day, it was used because punk wasn't hard enough. If it was pornography, it was "softcore" and this was the true, hardcore stuff. HC punk was independent, DIY, incredibly simple, as fast as possible, and lyrics that were screamed at top volume. Most songs were under 2 minutes in the early days. It was made by kids, for kids, and it was completely outside the record industry at first (seriously, HC bands played spaces that weren't rock clubs because clubs wouldn't take them due to violence and the fact so many of the kids were under 21 and couldn't drink). Bands recorded their own material, called the pressing plant and had it pressed, did the art work, and then put together the packaging and sold it themselves. All without being able to get their records in stores, much less on the radio. Rock stars were seen as gigantic pussies. Fakes. Poseurs. They couldn't operate the way HC bands did, starving in the back of a van, looking for a place to crash. It was also completely unsustainable for fairly obvious reasons.

Bad Brains. That is not an opinion. It is a fact. I'll be honest, Bad Brains is not my favorite hardcore band, but I recognize their almost incalculable influence on the scene. If there is no Bad Brains, and Black Flag to a lesser extent, there is no hardcore. My favorite is, being a DC guy, Minor Threat. Rites of Spring is a close second.

Got infinitely better when they outgrew the hardcore crap and Anthony learned how to sing.

Here's their first album. It's the defining document of hardcore. Also, it's no surprise it never became mainstream. LINK

Have it playing now. So I use to listen to the Misfits. Brings back memories of "man lets start a band" and it never happened Been on a DIY/Punk kick since I started reading this board. Mainly cause all the recommendations are usually punk rock. I think me turning 30 in 36 days has something to do with trying to feel 17 again.

We were kids and grew up, some. A few of those bands I still like though. At the Drive-In was great, Circa Survive has some really cool guitar work. A few others as well. That He is Legend song I posted has a very cool, upbeat jazz sounding intro.

What? Blue Sky Noise was the first decent album they made. It was the first time Anthony didn't sound like a 10 year old throwing a tantrum. Some people, man.
