| Enders game (Posted on 1/13/13 at 9:24 pm)
Anyone excited for the movie? I know people read the book. But the book isn't the first one. Any suggestions on if I should read it or not? What books do I read? I don't want to read all 12 of them TIA

12? Just read Enders game. Don't think the movie is going to have anything to do with the others.

Ender's game is the fourth chronologically but the first published. It's different than most of the books in the series. It's remarkably different than the others in the original quartet (Xenocide, Speaker for the Dead, and Children of the Mind). That Shadow series is more about the people around Ender. They are all very good books. Card is a prolific and quality writer. Sometimes his overt Mormonism bleeds through into the story, but most of the time you can overlook it.

Ender's Game is the only one you'll need to read to follow the movie; if you want to be in depth, you can also read Ender's Shadow, the book that is parallel to it, and told from the viewpoint of those surrounding him in the last 3/4ths of Ender's Game.

The Homecoming saga is pretty good. Even though it is overtly the book of Mormon put in Scifi cloth. Still pretty good though. I wanted to punch babies with what he did at the start of the forth book, or more accurately the end of the third. Even though I know why he did it And to the OP: My understanding is that the movie is primarily based on Ender's Game, with some elements drawn from Ender's Shadow. Which take place chronologically at the same time. If you want to insist on reading the first books to the movie, you would be fine reading Ender's Game and then Shadow. FWIW, here is my revised chronological order of the books if you are interested (I removed shorter pieces that are better off left reading till after, and which reek of money making and quite possibly were ghostwritten): Ender's Game Ender's Shadow Shadow of the Hegemon Shadow Puppets Shadow of the Giant Ender in Exile (You can choose to omit this as well). Speaker for the Dead Shadows in Flight Xenocide Children of the Mind Although there is a LOT to be said about reading the Ender Quartlet first (As it was published), and then going back and read the rest in whatever order you'd like.

Enders shadow, which focuses on Bean isn't a bad series.

Sid, I read Enders Game about a year ago, just read Shadow in about 18 hours and am now trying to decide which way to go. I can: Read in chronological order and finish the Bean quartet or Finish the Ender books and then move to finish the Shadow books Thoughts?

I guess it depends on which you would enjoy more...both are very valid choices. I will say this if it will help you decide: The Shadow series is more about geopolitical movements. It is scifi, but it takes place in a world very similar to the current one. The three remaining books of the Ender quartlet are very philosophy driven, and in my opinion, the best books of the entire series. Especially Speaker for the Dead and Xenocide. If you would rather save the best for last, read it chronologically. If you think you will get burnt out reading a dozen books in a series, do it in bursts reading the Ender Quartlet, then the Shadow series, and then fill in the rest here and there. They are all basically him just filling in some of the holes left in the past books.

Shadow of the Hedgemon is the best book of the series.

We are just going to have to disagree. The pre chapter conversations alone in front of Xenocide is enough to cap them all IMO.
