Question on using slugs

Has anyone ever shot slugs out of there shotgun that has choke tubes?

Guess I could google that, but looking first hand.

Use the most open bore tube you have.

Improved Cylinder... If its a saboted slug you should be using a rifled barrel...

This is what I'm using, not using saboted slugs. Lost a nice hog due to using buckshot today and I had a few slugs with me which would of been better.

Non-saboted slugs are terribly inaccurate, they drop very quickly. One of those cases where your better off with a rifle....

My buddy shot one out of his nova with a choke in it, but I'm not sure which choke it was.

He's got a nice little bubble at the end of the barrel now, and the choke is in there for good.

Benelli manual and website recommends cylinder IIRC, but the gun doesn't come with that one, and I believe I read you can use IC for slugs. That's what I put in when I load slugs, but I've never actually fired one. Just did a few swamp hunts where I had them in and didn't see a deer.

re: Question on using slugs

I've shot all the deer I've killed with slugs. I was using Imp Cyl but then bought a rifled choke tube for my Browning.

I keep foster type slugs in a pie pan at 50 yards. I don't shoot any further so I'm good with them.

Winchester makes a 1650 fps hollow point slug for smooth bores and it is an accurate sumbitch outta my Browning.

Buy a few different brands, shot em and see which ones do best out of your gun. I have a youth model Mossberg 500 that I had bought for my wife before she died to hunt with me. It had a rifled barrel. I found out that it frickin hated Hornady SST sabots as well as Federal/Barnes Expander sabots. Ended up using Brenneke's and it liked them the best.

Was duck hunting first. Should of had my .44 mag with me, but due to the high water I'm hunting in, it would of been underwater.

Of course a rifle is better and yes, I know they shoot like shite. Only killed a couple deer with them many years ago. They do make one hell of a hole. That is the reason I lost the hog today due to a lack of a blood trail using buckshot. shite load of water everywere.

Oh, if I were using my very old 870 wingmaster that only shoots 3", but has a 30" barral with full choke, that sucker would of not gone far. That sucker rolled many a deer with buckshot over the years.

my sbe came with the cyl choke, improved, mod, improved-mod, and full. i've shot slugs once out of the improved without any problem but i wouldn't do it again.
i put a 22" smooth bore cyl barrel, ported with sights on an old mossberg 500 for my slug gun. 3" loads are real BLAST to shoot!

re: Question on using slugs

I've had an old long barrel bolt action .410 since I was a teen. Stamped on the barrel is "Full Choke", but there is screw-in/removable choke.

I've fired slugs out of it for decades. It'll hit a paper plate every time at 75 yards. I used to nail small/medium deer at up to 45 yards with it.

Perhaps since slugs are hollow, they compress when going through a choke? I dunno. I just know it worked quite well.

Can you have lead slugs on you while duck hunting? I thought you couldn't even have them on you.

But I haven't hunted back home in LONG time.

I bought a H and R single shot with a riffled barrel for $235. Its deadly out to 150 yards.
