Marc Stein on EG10 rumors from Reno DLeague showcase

quote:

Heard a Reno rumble or two that the Hornets will make shooting guard Eric Gordon available between now and the Feb. 21 deadline, but that was emphatically denied by one well-placed source.

Also heard that it's actually the Hornets who've been getting calls from interested teams, but the latest signals emanating from New Orleans suggest that the future Pelicans have no intention of moving him.

The reality is that Gordon is likely to be subjected to trade speculation for the foreseeable future after his very public lobbying last summer to convince New Orleans not to match the max offer sheet he got from Phoenix. Bear in mind, though, that the Hornets are 10-4 in the mere 14 games that Gordon has played as a Hornet, rusty as he has looked in a lot of them. Which makes keeping the roster as is worth exploring, no?

The Hornets, remember, are on course to have significant free-agent money to spend this summer and add to the current core. They also just became the first team to sweep all three Texas franchises in a three-game span since the Lakers pulled that off in March 2009. Given the positivity around the place these days -- just listen to Ryan Anderson in Box 3 -- it appears highly unlikely that you'll see the Hornets in shake-up mode over the next month-plus.

Don't forget, furthermore, that Gordon (as covered in Box 7) has veto power over any trade until mid-July and can't be traded to Phoenix specifically until a year passes from the date New Orleans matched the Suns' offer sheet.

I'm happy this was shot down quickly. At the very least, it's worth seeing what happens the rest of the year and free agency.

The Anderson interview was good.

Shocked the Hornets were the only team to really go after him.

Pretty stoked to see who that big cap space will be used on. Next year is looking promising

That Weekend Dime was extremely Hornets-centric

me too...i think they will stay where they are with the bigs.

I would think the biggest needs are SF, and a guard...nothing behind Vasquez and Gordon right now.

Yep. And I'm not seeing a big money deal at this point.

If he sustains anything close to this level of play, resign Aminu, but also get some more help at the 3, pick up Lopez's option, and add some guard depth as well.

Maybe toss Vasquez a new deal if he'll bite for 3-4 years at 5-6 million per year

If they do that, they're nothing more than a 7-8 seed. Aminu is not a starting SF and I would rather Lopez be a back up as well. Sign Al Jefferson then we could afford to keep Aminu in the lineup.

If he can continue playing around his recent level, he is definitely an NBA starter. Not being able to score doesn't mean you aren't a good player.

LOL

Lopez is a backup who just happens to start.

And you want drop a max contract for another big man? How do you play Anderson, Davis, and Jefferson together?

Like I said, if you get another legit scoring option, we could live with him. It's not just the scoring. It's the nights when he can't shoot, dribble, catch a pass, etc. Very inconsistent.

I don't know what you are LOL about. Are you reiterating my point or mocking it?

Considering someone like Al Jefferson starting and Robin Lopez as his back up makes for a great C combination, yes.

Same way Anderson plays with Lopez and Davis now. Whoever's hot will stay in. Not hard.

Signing Jefferson makes no sense in the context of the next 3 or 4 years, unless they are giving up on Davis as a frontcourt player or dealing Anderson.

Why throw a max contract at a player to strengthen what is already the strongest part of your team?

Lopez averages about 10 less minutes per game than Jefferson. Unless they are going to hour long games, finding 30+ mpg for Davis, Anderson, and Jefferson will be very difficult.

Plus this hot hand stuff here is getting a bit ridiculous. It's working now with young players but in no way is sustainable when you're talking about Davis (potential franchise player), Anderson (quasi All-Star) and Jefferson (quasi All-Star) plus Lopez/Smith over the next 3-4 years. Professional athletes have egos and they all want to play. What happens when Lopez, Smith, Jefferson, Anderson, and Davis are all having good nights? You play Smith/Lopez because they have the slightly more hot hand?

Hot hand at this point is fine and is working because Davis is a 19 year old rookie hitting the wall right now. That won't happen much going forward. Adding a max contract big creates unnecessary problems.

Again, the frontcourt is the best part of the team, why spend 1/4 of the cap on something that doesn't need much fixing?

Like I said, if he continues to play at the level we've seen to start the season and the last few games, he is a starter. Plenty of time to see if he can do that.

Stopped reading. Jefferson just turned 28 and is a legit C while AD is not and may never be. As for Ryan, you need a 2nd unit.

Stopped reading when he made complete sense? We need a SF and a PG/SG, not more front court help. Anderson, Lopez, Davis, and Smiht make a solid if not good front court with a ton of potential.

Dude Anderson and AD are both PF's. Lopez would be best suited as a back up C and Smiht is a nice back up PF/C that wouldn't have to go anywhere. Yes, SF is the biggest need but there are none to sign with the cap room the Hornets have. An all star caliber C would be a great asset for this team.

If there are none to sign, don't sign a C. We have a good front court that will only get better. We need a SF or a PG. then Gravy can come off the bench at PG or SG.

That would be like the Saints drafting a RB in the first round this year.

What's so funny? You don't think he can play combo if needed? He certainly has an outside shot, can penetrate, and pass.

Then you play him at PG. I wasn't aware you couldn't make intelligent line up choices, my bad.
