Sobering Article - The Syndemic of STDS Among Gay Men

This is an article from November 2012 and below are a couple of paragraphs from it.

quote:

It has been over 30 years since the first gay[1] men were diagnosed with what would later be called AIDS. Since then over 300,000 men who have sex with men (MSM) have died of AIDS, and 6,000 are expected to die this year and every year for the foreseeable future. In 2008, 17,940 MSM were diagnosed with HIV infections, an increase of 17% from 2005. MSM accounted for 53% of all new infections. It is estimated that one half million MSM are currently infected with HIV. According to a report from the CDC, one in five sexually active gay and bisexuals is carrying the AIDS virus and nearly half of those infected don’t know it. MSM are 44 to 86 times more likely to be diagnosed HIV positive than men who don’t.[2]

quote:

A study of 28,530 MSM who attended STD clinics in England revealed the core of the problem.[68] Between 1999 and 2002, MSM who came to the clinics for treatment of other STDs were anonymously tested for HIV. Of these 3,593 (12.9%) were HIV positive. 2,520 of these had been previously diagnosed. This alone should be of concern since infection with another STD is a sign that these HIV positive men or their partners were having sex with other partners. Not only could these encounters spread HIV, but infection with a new STDs could complicate treatment for HIV.

Of the remaining 25,910, 11,655 (45 %) refused voluntary counseling and HIV testing (VCT) even though the fact that they were infected with another STD meant that they were engaging in sex with multiple partners and at high risk for HIV infection. Of those 11,655 who refused VCT, the anonymous testing revealed that 737 were HIV positive. These HIV positive men went back into the community, untreated, and purposefully ignorant of the threat they posed to others.[69]

quote:

The syndemic goes on unchecked because prevention efforts controlled by gay AIDS activists and those who defer to them. Currently, it is estimated that in the U.S. 500,000 MSM are HIV positive. Drug therapy can prolong the life of those infected for an average of 24 extra years at an estimated total cost of $618,900 per person.[142]

The gay community sees the devastation: the dead, the dying, the chronically ill. They demand a vaccine, a cure, more money, more education. They claim victim status, and in a sense they are victims. The government and media, by desiring to be thought compassionate, allow gay AIDS activists to exempt MSM from reasonable, proven public health strategies.

I bolded the cost to highlight why I believe that with Obamacare starting up, the government is going to control this and why people like Toddy, who are so excited about government recognition of "gay marriage" that it may very well be what will help the government control gay men and will take their "freedom" from them.

If Obama's idiotic unilateral executive actions continue and are allowed to stand as precedent, the entire country should be concerned. Government control is not a desirable goal. Without a doubt some future iteration of WhiteHouse occupation will more closely resemble Santorum than son-of-obama. When that happens, the left will vacillate between tears and apoplexy. Vengeful righties will dance in the street. We'll all be poorer for the result.

I hate when people pull this shite out of their ass... Yeah, that was even close to happening in the early 2000's when repubs had congress and the prez

but as pertains to the OP... all this is inevitable with the way gay community buries their head in the sand on this issue thinking the magic pill is being developed and just around the corner...

I missed this part. How are gay AIDS activists trying to subvert reasonable, "proven, public health strategies?" Which strategies is he talking about?

Gay men on average have way more sexual partners than their heterosexual counter parts. The nature of the sex they engage in makes them more open to disease. It would be great, in terms of public health, if more gay men practiced monogamy, but even in a long term relationship, those two men are at a higher risk for things like Hepatitis.

Assuming you are serious,

Here is one: From 1993 until January 4, 2010, HIV was considered a ground of inadmissibility, meaning that HIV-positive foreign nationals could be denied short-term visas or applications for lawful permanent residence simply because of their HIV status. Fortunately, that discriminatory law came to an end in the beginning of 2010.

Other communicable diseases can be a bar for admission but HIV activists have obtained equality, an HIV infected person is the same as a disease free person. This is politics over public health.

re: Sobering Article - The Syndemic of STDS Among Gay Men

Several things jump out at me from this article.

First, since day 1 of the discovery of AIDS (originally coined Gay-Related Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome), gay activists have done a disservice to those they claim to support. When it was suggested that the gay community curb its behavior, activists shouted from the rooftops that no one can tell them how to live their lives. Thus, the practice of unprotected sex with multiple partners continues to be a HUGE problem in the gay community.

Second, while 6,000 deaths is 6,000 too many, that number pales in comparison to other deadly diseases, like cancer. AIDS is preventable in the vast majority of cases.

Third, the high percentage of people who are knowingly engaging in risky behavior even after being diagnosed as HIV-positive suggests that mental health issues are at play as well. Sane, responsible people would not willingly go out and engage is said behaviors at the risk of harming others.

Wait.

I thought what two men do in the privacy of their own bedroom doesn't affect me at all?

Sounds like it raises the incidence of disease, and probably costs me more in insurance premiums and taxes.

Let's pass anti-sodomy laws. That should fix it.

I'm having trouble deciphering if this is still Mitt Romney's fault or if the blame gets shifted to House Republicans now.
I'll wait for MSNBC to tell me which of the two is correct...

Did I suggest that?

I'm just saying, as I have for years, that the "doesn't affect you" argument is bull shite.

And you can say the same thing for heterosexual couples having children.

In my view, the government shouldn't be responsible for the health risk you expose yourself to as much as the government shouldn't be responsible for having children you weren't ready for. The government does though, because once it takes on that responsibility, they own you.

Agreed, but people want the government to care for the results of their irresponsible behavior at others expense. Then they want us to say, what I do in my private life is none of your business and doesnt affect you.

Which of course is bull shite.

Should it be involved in such things as stopping the spread of tuberculosis, eliminating small pox, polio, etc.? Those are risks to the public health.

Are you owned because the government is providing your community college education, or any of the other benefits of organized society you enjoy?
