| Who still supports the war on drugs, and if so, why? (Posted on 1/12/13 at 9:56 pm)
I think this is really relevant considering most of the threads on this board has to do with gun control and gun violence. Wouldn't a hands off approach to drugs drive down prices and reduce the violence?

i do not, in any way. side-story (def not a CSB), my good friend decided to become a cop at age 40-something, here in atl. last night, a rookie who was on my friend's beat on friend's night off was shot in the mouth by a 20-year old drug dealer who ran when approached. My friend walked into the bar 2 hours after it had happened, looking pale as a ghost. He's such a great guy, and I'm glad it wasn't him, and also sad that our stupid drugs policies helped put his colleague in harm's way. article: LINK the first word was that the assailant had been shot back in the face, but looks as though he was just roughed up nicely.

Interesting that people think loser drug dealers are going to suddenly become model citizens. There's a reason it's called dope. Takes one to use it. I'm all for legalizing it...and arming everyone so we can weed the stupid ones quicker.

I don't think that. There will still be dysfunctional's. What I do know is we would save more money and give less of a platform to senseless violence if we had a more hands off policy.

Yes, but how many blue collar jobs would open up for legalization?

I think that there is truth in this statement. Whether or not the war on drugs is the right path, if it were eliminated, the crime would just be replaced by other, probably more violent crimes.

not hijacking thread, but this thug had been in jail numerous time--convicted felon. if it weren't for the innocent children and old people, i'd say just let those parts of town do and sell blow etc to their hearts' content and let them kill each other off. and yeah, arm the law abiding citizens outside the war zone to help keep these animals inside it.

Yeah but it would cripple the insurance industry having to cover shitheads that blow coke/ do meth/ smoke bath salts etc. and wonder why their organs shut down and bodies quit working. I don't want to have to pay for their stupidity with higher premiums and emergency room visits

so your argument is that hard drug use would increase significantly and remain higher over a long period of time? i doubt stats and studies bear that out.

Unions. Check who throws the most money in opposition to MMJ/Legalization bills in places like CO, WA, OR, CA, etc. Teachers/Sheriffs/Prison guard unions. Most of the Dem opposition stems from this. The unions fund them, so they do what the unions say. That and it grows government power A LOT, so they aren't ideologically barred from supported the WOD. Republicans who support the WOD are simply liberals of a different flavor. They are beholden to mostly by certain social cons who claim to be "conservative" while simultaneously being totally ok with the federal government telling people what they can and cannot do in the privacy of their owns homes. Both sides are supported by the industry lobbies.

Is anyone claiming a benefit? Why is that relevant? Is that a prerequisite for something being legal?

I happily participate in the War on Drugs. I make sure that they are all, ahem, destroyed on sight.

Do you like music, or literature? I was also unaware that the litmus test for legality was whether or not something would be beneficial.

Plenty of research has shown that LSD/acid has therapeutic benefits.

What? I didn't say there was a benefit. I simply said they're being treated now while being illegal.
