Value Added Tax

Most brilliant scam ever. Hides the actual cost from the public because businesses have to incorporate it into the sticker price.

As a bonus, the same politicians who passed the VAT will get to demagogue the "evil greedy" corporations for the spike in retail prices.

Whoa whoa whoa--that's a lot of taxes... But I just heard we can mint trillion dollar coins. Problem solved. No more taxes EVER!

I have no problem with a gas tax in theory since the people that use the roads more often should be paying more than people that walk to work. I say "in theory" because, of course, the government pisses away the money on things that have nothing to do with roads. Gas taxes should be set to include the typical sales taxes that are included with any purchase + the exact tax amount needed to maintain infrastructure, not a penny more.

The tax per mile plan not only is overkill since, as mentioned, the gas tax already takes care of this, but it's incredibly invasive. And, of course, they will have to charge people to install the meters (GPS?), and I'm sure that their will be hefty fines for those that don't comply.

This actually came up in the news six months ago. One motivation is liberals trying to coerce people to move back to the city and to use mass transit.

A serious unintended consequence would be the impact on tourism. The vast majority of Americans go on vacation trips by car.

GPS wouldn't necessarily be needed. You can note the mileage each year when you renew your car registration.

The only reason for the GPS would be to expand the Big Brother surveillance state.

The GPS portion has already become a part of carpool lanes in Los Angeles just 4 months ago. The HOV lanes were supposed to be a reward for those that carpool for helping to "clean our air" and so there aren't as many cars on our very crowded freeways. Now, in order to use the HOV lanes you must pay a $40 fee to the state, who in return, provides a "transponder." For those that are not carpooling but wish to drive in the HOV, they can purchase the "transponder" and pay milage tolls that measures your mileage and charges you a fee, which is directly taken from your bank account. People here already know that it will eventually apply to all of us to even drive on the freeways and will eventually just be used to add another fee. It ain't enough that we have the highest gas taxes in the nation. The government just can't help itself in taking more from the citizens every way possible.

BTW, we had increased income taxes and some other fees taken from us as of January 1 and it is a freaking shock to how much less money is in the check - $700 a month less.

Then by the same logic leeches who consume more of the handouts should be paying more of the tax burden. No? They can't? Then screw this plan too.
