Thinking about maybe getting a vita or holding on to the credit until new consoles come out

If it plays PS2 games, first version PS3, its worth more than you paid for it. Geeks are all over those units.

That is the one. Guy I work with traded a broken one in to gamestop, he got a new PS3, and 3 free new games. Even swap. Check e-bay and craigslist prices for "first release" PS3's.

I had a buddy take an original PS3 to Gamestop and got $59 for it. I was pissed cause I would have given him at least $100.

How can you tell if you have a first release? I know I got mine early, but I can't remember exactly when.

Look at the number of USB ports on the front of the console. If your PS3 has four USB ports, it's probably a model with backward compatibility for PS2 games. If it has two, it is not.

Check the back of the console for more precise information about your model. There will be a label that includes your PS3's model number. The model number begins with the letters CECH. You have backward compatibility for PS2 games if the model number begins CECHA, CECHB, CECHC, or CECHE. All other models are incapable of running PS2 software.

Put in a PS2 disc and see if it plays.

If it is a 60GB or 20GB fat PS3, it can play PS2 games, if it is an 80GB model ONLY the CECHE01 model number can play PS2 games.
Look at the model number.

damn my old 60GB fat PS3 got the yellow light a couple years ago and I threw it away. thought it was worthless

Mine is a 60GB fatty. I play PS2 and PS games on it just as much if not more than I PS3 games.
