| Football Does NOT Kill People (Posted on 1/11/13 at 12:08 pm)
Finally, someone does a little research. I'm sick of Roger Goodell being a bureaucratic pussy and not standing up to defend the shield and the sport we all love. If concussions were the culprit, Steve Young and Troy Aikman would not have careers talking about football. The media is always so quick to ignore the lifestyles those who kill themselves live. Stop Blaming Football

To be fair, QBs take serious hits hardly ever in practice and minimally in games. Players "in the middle" of the field collide pretty much every play in practice and games. All the lineman and RB commentator are much better examples. My problem with the NFL handling of things is there seems to be no or very limited assistance for players after they've finished playing. Football may not kill people but it does wreck their bodies and the NFL probably wouldn't be facing lawsuits if it was doing more for the former players that helped build the brand.

Not at all - but the media, and Goodell, have been making big hits out to be the reason players with shady off the field issues kill themselves.

I disagree. Players are played very well, however some blow their money and thus are unable to take care of themselves after their career is over.

So maximizing player safety won't lead to less injuries, both during and after football?

If there was no lawsuit in place, the saints would have gotten a slap on the wrist. Badell did what he did to save face. As for concussions...it's irrelevant if they kill people or not. Those players knew what they were getting into. What's more, those players blatantly and purposely lied to coaches and staff when injured to get back into the game. Now all of a sudden, you want some sort of monetary compensation for your injuries that YOU lied about? I Don't indulge in certain careers bc I don't want to worry about maiming myself or dying on a daily basis. That's a choice I make. NFL players chose millions of dollars and fame over their long term health and now they are mad about it. They don't deserve a damn thing.

My point was this: Every time a player or ex-player kills himself they automatically try to connect the suicide with concussions as a result of the violence of the game - however this article explains that there is no proven connection.

I wouldn't expect my current employer to provide assistance for me if I left the company. Especially not if I was making 7 figures every year for 5 years (give or take). There seems to be some fallacy that once NFL players retire, they can't work anymore and are therefore entitled to retirement income and healthcare (in their late 20's early 30's no less). They are normal citizens just like every one of us. If we "retired" from our jobs, and we didn't have the income to supplement such a "retirement", then we'd have to get a job. NFL players also get a pension based on years played in the league. It isn't nearly close the figure they are used to living off of, but it makes a great additional income to whatever job you can find at the ripe old age of 30-35. Again, these players don't deserve a damn thing.

dcrews, the problem is that there are lawyers out there that know how to rake such claims - they make big $ and the player they represent makes big $.
