Amazon customers can now, legally, transfer owned CDs to most digital players

quote:

"What would you say if you bought music CDs from a company 15 years ago, and then 15 years later that company licensed the rights from the record companies to give you the MP3 versions of those CDs ... and then to top it off, did that for you automatically and for free? Well, starting today, it's available to all of our customers -- past, present, and future -- at no cost," said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com founder and CEO.

Seems pretty big, no?

ETA: So it's only for CDs bought through Amazon. Not as big of a deal as i thought...

It is a nice gesture for the customers, I am content with simply ripping the songs off of the cds as I currently do, and backing them up to an external drive.

I think it's also trying to get previous customers to come back.

Perhaps, or they could be embedding code to track usage data, etc... on all customers?

I do personally think that it is a good idea to supplement the customers with mp3 copies of the songs.

Amazon rocks. I've got seven shipments arriving from them today.

If it weren't for Amazon Prime, they would lose a lot of business from me. I order just about everything through Amazon.

Amazon does track user behavior to sell you more stuff, but I think the move is more about using the cloud infrastructure they've already created to try and keep people in the Amazon ecosystem, not to track them. Tracking is a bonus.

A friend and I combined our collections resulting in 396 GBs and > 57k songs. I am never doing that shite again. Got the entire thing on a desk top internal, two separate 1T externals each of which hold a copy of the entire thing, one is attached to my computer the other is in a bank safe deposit box in case of fire. I have 3 crates of albums left I was going to transfer and looked at them and said, nah, it ain't worth it.
