Does the state tax groceries for consumption? Cant remember if the stelly tax stuff being repealed took that away or not.

We don't pay taxes on groceries in Texas. Is it not the same in LA?

The problem is the Homestead Exemption is at 75k.

I think for this to pass you are going to have to put a cap on Sales tax so that people living in the cities don't pay 12.5%. Probably cap it at around 10%.

In order to offset it, I wouldn't be shocked to see a movement to lower the Homestead Exemption to 50k.

Not at all positive about the numbers, but you get the general idea.

As much as I love paying jack shite for property taxes, I support this.

We just pay parish tax on food items.

Heavily in favor.

Jindal if he can get this through

I wish the Federal government would do the same.

FL is 6.5% and extremely high property taxes.

Thats not to bad considering the location, tourist, and amount of 2nd homes. Also, what type of cuts do they give seniors that retire there?

Sales tax in EBR would be like 12.25% or so. I'd take that all day over state income tax though.

State tax is currently 5% & EBR tax is 4% I believe. If still true (was when I was working in retail in 2010), It would push it up to 11% total sales tax for those in EBR.

ETA: I'm not sure how I feel about the proposal yet seeing as how I only had ~$300 in state taxes deducted for 2012. I think that's about how much I had deducted, I don't have my Income tax spreadsheet on my phone so not 100% sure. I can't do the math at the moment but I think I would be paying more each year than I would if the current plan stays in place. But, it might help take some of the pressure off from my reduced net pay due to the new increase in social security deductions.

It's the other way around. State = 4% and EBR = 5%.

Appreciate it man.

I knew it was something along those lines... So then that would make it 12% for EBR.... Still not sure how I feel about the proposed hike and 12% muddies the waters for me even more

I would be for this.

At some point, the Amazon loop hole will be closed though.

I would imagine that a cap of some sort will get worked in for the sales tax which makes me think that property taxes will in turn go up

I'm not aware of any cuts for seniors. But I'm not one and my parents live in Orange beach, AL so dunno.

I'm not complaining though. FL is great IMO and I personally like the higher sales and property tax as opposed to the income tax. Also, the FL lotto is huge and helps out a lot as well.

Let's take an example. Baker with 9.5% sales tax.

Does tax apply to new auto?

Example of $30k auto would add $3750 in tax?

For states that have changed to no state income tax, are there any stories of companies getting bold and lowering their pay scales? The only reason I ask is because I wouldn't put it past my employer to do something like that.

If this was to pass, you should be buying a bunch of big ticket items sometime before it hits: cars, home, etc..

TN has no state income tax and 7% sales tax. But the state constitution prohibits cities from having more than 2.75% sales tax of their own.

Property taxes are higher in some places than others. What you generally see is what you'd expect - irresponsible people gonna irresponsible. The big shitty cities have high property taxes and worse schools. It's a cycle.

Would love it. Also would still be in favor if property taxes went up to compensate as well.

As least you can choose how and when to pay these taxes.

You must not own property or are 100% homestead exempt.

Did you not see what was passed the last election? Florida takes care of seniors and service people. Some now don't pay property taxes, I voted for those people.
