The key is to not get a laptop geared to take the place of a desktop.
That is a very bad move.

I got my wife the google chromebook. Very fast, self updates Samsung Google Chromebook from bestbuy was $250

I only use it for school though, don't play games on it

I would like to spend less then $500. I use it to write, do research and some streaming. No games or anything like that.

No laptop will break the bank. You can throw them as hard as you want, but the bank is made of steel and stuff.

The Panasonic Toughbooks will be your best shot, but I doubt even they will break the bank. They can be a little pricey though, not sure if you want to spend a whole lot.

I have a Toshiba that I'm pretty happy with. It wss around $400 on Amazon.
