Not only did this brave 15-year-old defend his home against 2 burglars, but also his 12-year-old sister who was in the house with him.
For some reason, the way this is worded makes it seem like he is defending the house from his sister and 2 burglars.

No, I wasn't saying the report was biased. Just that site seems like a place for crazies.

Know this, however: if you are an adult male, the DA could, and probably will, look at the extent of force used, meaning that if there was a way to resolve the problem and protect your family without the use of deadly force but you decided to waste the dude for the hell of it, the DA could press charges. Not very likely in a southern state, but you never know when you'll run into an a-hole DA.
This happened in Houston....and it's a constable's son. Pretty safe bet that the D.A. wont look at the boy or anything else except the intruders

Great story, could have defended with .45 just as well?

Yeah, the .223 AR round is probably why the burglar lived. That round has a very low initial muzzle velocity and doesn't become highly effective until it reaches 2,500 fps, at which point if fragments upon contact with flesh and causes devastating injuries. It takes a good distance for the round to get up to that velocity, though, making it a poor choice for something like home defense.

That was the article in its entirety. It did also have a video though.

A .45 is a lot harder to shoot than an AR. If he had tons of practice with a handgun and could shoot it effectively and accurately the sure it would. But being he's 15 and can't legally own a gun I doubt that's true in this case.

A .223 round accelerates after it's left the muzzle of the barrel? I thought the expanding gases pushed a bullet out of a barrel at it's peak velocity and then the bullet slowly decelerates as the laws of physics (friction, gravity) act upon it.

Obviously we need to ban 15 year olds

I think the minor they were referring to was one of the burglars, not the shooter. The article isn't written well.

Yes. The laws of physics do act upon it, that's why it makes a noise and releases some flash when it leaves - the bullet hasn't absorbed all the energy. It will continue to accelerate to a point before friction saps its momentum.

Whoever wrote that should be embarrassed. The wording makes it sound like the sister was attacking as well and that the kid got arrested.

Well I guess I've got something else to add to the giant list of shite I don't know! I owe a few guns, but I'm not a "gun guy" (or a physicist) by a long shot. I always assumed muzzle velocity equaled maximum velocity.

How so? Are you aware of how difficult it is to properly manipulate a semiautomatic pistol at any age without extensive practice? Much less at 15 years old. Plus the limits on ammunition and a magazine change had the situation required it? To answer your question, no, it could not have been defended with a .45 just as well.
