| LA sales tax could rise to 7 percent to eliminate income taxes (Posted on 1/10/13 at 9:43 am)
LINK For or against? What are sales tax rates in other states with no income tax?

And no mention of a potential effect on property taxes. Interesting. TX has no inc tax, but state sales tax is 6.25% and property taxes are much higher than LA. I know LA has hung its hat on low prop taxes so I wonder if the rise to 7% would be enough to eliminate inc tax and keep prop taxes low. But as a TX resident with plans to move back home eventually, I would totally be for it.

Amazing how we pay income and sales tax higher than that in other states. I need to start looking where my money goes

To add on to what you said, local jurisdictions in TX can add up to 2%, so at max the rate is 8.25%.

Sales tax in EBR would be like 12.25% or so. I'd take that all day over state income tax though.

Therefore the local jurisdictions have to charge more in prop tax. This probably won't pass because local jurisdictions won't change their sales taxes and then you'll have the lower class bitching about how much more they have to pay now in groceries.

Would love it. Also would still be in favor if property taxes went up to compensate as well. As least you can choose how and when to pay these taxes.

If Jindal gets this passed he will be the greatest Gov this state has ever seen.

I live in Chesapeake, Va and the Tax man rapes me in every hole. State income tax, sales tax, City tax, dining tax, tourism tax, and some of the highest property taxes in the US. Can't wait to get out of here.

I would take an additional 3% State sales tax to swap out the state income tax in a heart beat. keep the same waiver on food and medicine. i paid $1500+ in state taxes on my pay stub last year, i would have to spend $50,000 (every year) to rack up $1500 with the additional 3% sales tax.....

Does the state tax groceries for consumption? Cant remember if the stelly tax stuff being repealed took that away or not.

won't be hard to do if it's an across the board tax hike w/o any exemption on things like food, medicine, or gas.

Meh.........6 one way, half a dozen the other. You're going to pay it either way......would probably benefit folks who are lower middle class to poor the most since theoretically they consume the least. If this were to happen they would probably have to cut a deal with Amazon to collect taxes in LA. I do probably 75% of my shopping on Amazon and save a ton on taxes. Honestly I don't understand why more people don't......if it's a high profile purchase I'll go to the stores and browse then go home and buy from Amazon.
