| Do you care about the Academy Awards and/or who wins? (Posted on 1/10/13 at 12:00 pm)
Just thinking of this because of the nominations and the 50+ threads RollTide has started on them lately. Sign me up with Juaquin Phoenix. I put more stock in to the Roscoes than I do the Oscars. Hell half of them are like 70-80 years old and probably 5,900 of the 6,000 are white. Meatloaf and Pee Wee Herman are members for gods sake. They pick favorites so every year you pretty much know before the movies are released who half the nominations will be. Life of Pi with 11 nominations this year? Really? How about you nominate some movies people actually really like, not because Ang Lee directed it. Last year HUGO, yes freaking HUGO, tied for the most wins I mean I LOVE me some Martin Scorsese, but cmon, the movie was average at best. And im trying my best not to talk about Woody Allen. War Horse, Midnight in Paris, freaking HUGO, get best picture nominations... But lets say a movie like The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, who everybody loved? Pffttfpff, BITCH PLEASE. Meryl Streep, great actress. But OMG is that a picture a paparazzi took of Meryl Streep taking a crap?? Give her an Oscar for that! OLMLandshark mentions Ben Affleck getting no respect, I mention Leo Dicaprio. Take a guess at how many Oscar nominations Leo has. Not wins. Just nominations... 3. He was nominated for Supporting Actor in Whats Eating Gilbert Grape and Best Actor for The Aviator and Blood Diamond. The Titanic is tied for the most nominations AND wins ever. 11 and 14. Maybe im wrong but Leo was the main character in the movie, he and Kate Winslet. Everything about the movie got a nomination or won, Kate Winslet for Best Actress included. Leo? Not even a nomination. The Departed, Best Picture, check. Martin Scorsese, Best Director, check. Mark Wahlberg, Best Supporting Actor nomination WTF?, check. Leonardo Dicaprio, who? Gangs of New York, literally every major category nominations except, you guessed it, Supporting Actor. Nothing for Inception, Shutter Island, Catch Me if You Can, Body of Lies, J Edgar (not a great movie but great acting, and the Academy loves some Eastwood and biopics)... Nothing. End Rant, iwyLSUiwy How often do these guys get it right though? %50 tops? Thats being lenient. I guess the simple question is: Do you care about the Oscars or put any stock into them?

God no.. Oscars are barely a step above the Peoples Choice or Nickolodeon Awards at this point.

Nope. Don't give a shite. I feel sorry for people who do. What difference does it make?

No. Self satisfying garbage. Moreover, The BP winner more often than not is pretty forgettable especially compared to movies that came out that year

All award shows have been made irrelevant by the internet. If I want to debate or grade anything, I can debate it to death on the internet. Just like we do here. I can't remember the last time I watched any awards show.

Love the Oscars. It's an institution, just like the Heisman. Sure they don't always get it right, and the broadcast itself is hit or miss, but it's the frickING OSCARS. If nothing else, it's just a cool stroll down memory lane for cinephiles from the year before. It's nostalgia if nothing else, and you can't argue that most of the films nominated are worth some praise. I've watched them every year since I can remember and always will.

I'd have given Leo a nomination for the departed without a question, probably now for django, and maybe for revolutionary road. That'd be it probably. The guy rarely really sells me on his character. I usually just see Leo doing Leo. I'd equate him to Denzel Washington. Both have an area they can really knock out of the park but neither has proven they can do a lot outside of that.

The Heisman is quickly approaching Oscar levels of meaninglessness.

Oh I don't disagree, but I'm saying the name of both will ALWAYS carry some meaning IMO. And I'd argue that the Oscars do a better job of trying to figure out the best than the Heisman does. Like I said, even when they don't get it right, most nominees are at least worthy of some level of praise and recognition. Sure some worthy candidates get left off from time to time or don't take home the trophy, but that's no reason to discredit the attempt to identify and honor exceptional work in any industry. Nowadays it's just cooler to pretend like we're smarter than everyone else, and everything seen as establishment is lame and out of touch. But I kind of like the pageantry of it all. At the very least, it's harmless, and the people that don't like them should just tune out. Don't see the need to knock on something just because it isn't necessarily your thing.

Each year I am mildly curious who is nominated and wins. I don't watch the show, but I do like to see the results and then engage in a little debate. I try to watch most of the best picture nominees b/c they are usually good quality, even if not necessarily my preferred genres.

What pisses me off is that th emovie studios essentially tell the Oscar committees what movies to look for by the timing of their release. It's like they don't even start watching movies until November. I haven't looked this year, (I have in years passed) but I'd bet at least 2/3rds of nominations for actor, actress, picture, director, score and supporting cast were released November and later. Having said all that, I will watch.

Yes, for myriad reasons. And, if for no other, like Pulitzer Prize winners and nominees, you can count of them as quality prospects to enjoy the majority of the time, if they match your interest. Having written a few screen plays, I find the actual awards show inspiring, although a little less each year. Oh, and I liked "Life Of Pi". The ending really surprised me and made me think on three different levels of the actual scenario of what may have really happened, and how things are not so different on another level. Outstanding.

Wow. I agree about Denzel but I wouldnt classify them in the same area. I dont see Leo as being Leo in every role, he has some pretty good range. Same way I view Brad Pitt. Both seem to carry pretty boy tags but Pitt can act. I dont care what anybody says, the guy is a character actor. Benjamin Button, Inglorious Basterds, Fight Club, Burn After Reading, Seven, The Assassination of Jessie James BtCRF, Snatch, Twelve Monkeys. All roles that not everybody can play. Not saying that you dont think he's a good actor obviously, I just think people tend to look at Pitt and Leo the same, as not being very versatile. Not everybody could have done Blood Diamond, Gangs of New York, Shutter Island, The Aviator and though J Edgar kind of sucked, he was awesome.

My favorite Leo role is Cath Me if You Can. He carried that movie.
