| This is really, really bad for the NFL (Posted on 1/10/13 at 7:28 am)
This is why Goodell hammered the Saints. It wasn't about punishment for their crime, it was about being able to defend his actions and the league in a massive lawsuit that is coming in 5-10 years. This is also why Seau shot himself in the heart and not the head. His brain showed signs of CTE

The law suits that will be coming over the next 5-15 years will bring the league to bankruptcy

serious question: why did the NFL lie about this in the first place? It is pretty obvious to anyone with a brain that playing football can cause brain damage, just like boxing, getting in head on collisions, etc. What was the NFL thinking?

I said this back in April. "Bounty gate" is and was all about the ex-players' lawsuit and the league's attempt to protect itself.

2nd question: If the NFL had never lied about this, where would this situation be right now?

Their profits would be slightly lower because they would have managed this element of risk better.

How much teeth would a lawsuit from say Seau's family really have? It seems like there is an implied assumption of risk when playing a violent sport if it isn't explicitly defined in their contracts. It's not like they could claim wrongful death lawsuit. Not everyone with a brain disease commits suicide.

People who are overwhelmed with gambling debts probably commit suicide with the same frequency as ex NFL players suffering from brain damage if not much higher. Let's sue all businesses that depend on gambling revenue for wrongful deaths. Makes perfect sense.

maybe so. i think the only main difference is that we wouldn't have former players crying about it and all the incoming lawsuits. The short-term wouldn't see much of a change at all. I think in the long-term you'd see parents pushing their kids towards sports that are not seen as violent. But, still it wouldn't be a large change. I just don't understand why the NFL lied in the first place. It only hurt them.

So in order to protect the entire league he tries to throw one franchise under the bus. I know what I do if I'm Tom Benson. I do my best to get rid of the guy.

The NFL made a lot of money off that lie. And they've duped people like Powerman into thinking that it's an OK lie.

There's an implied assumption of risk when you become a coal miner, too. Those families have won lawsuits...

that's not the issue. the issue is that the NFL researched it, then lied to the NFLPA about the results. They intentionally lied to players about it.
