No kidding. The people who don't like bourbon notes in their beer are coming out of the woodwork here. I don't know who you people are anymore. Lots of whining about > 8% beers being good. I don't see too many of you drinking session beers in the daily FBD threads.
that's why I am using rum cubes this weekend I LOVE bourbon barrel aged stuff. My only problem is that they seem to change the ratings/scores/perception of "ordinary" beers.

74 of those 100 were over 8%. Seems like it can't be a good beer anymore unless it is an imperial aged in bourbon barrels.
That doesn't surprise me. Most of the craft beer enthusiasts I know favor beers above 8 percent, although not by design. If I make a list of my current top 10, it will likely have 6-8 beers at 8% or above. It's not like anyone is turning their nose up at a beer based on its ABV alone.

I have said this for a while. Just because there are shiny new beers on the block does not mean that Ruination isn't worth drinking anymore.

This is a crock of shite and exemplifies everything i dislike about Beer Advocate. These rankings should be for beers that are actually bottled whether it be year round or seasonal.
What exactly does it exemplify? Should rare beers not be rated on their site?
quote:
I don't know why but fanaticism over beers like this just kind of piss me off. Most of those rankings are inflated for trading purposes many times. People review it if its local to drive up the rating, get it pub, so people want to trade for it.
People are naturally going to be homers. But you think people are deliberately over-rating beers for that purpose? I guess we missed the bus on Abita.

How many different versions of the Hunuaphu's stout from cigar city can you have? There is like 4 up there. Its one of the main reasons i got away from BA.
It's BA's fault that they make 4 versions of it?
quote:
and there are now WAY TO frickING MANY bourbon barrel, wine barrel, maple infused, bacon cured, super yeast fermented, double chocolate, bat shite coffee roasted, super hop strain, and spice infused beers. make something simple and make it right. no need for all this crap.
If that's what people like... then what's the problem?

Ruination has 96 rating on BA and is in the "world-class" tier. I don't think anyone on BA is discounting its greatness.

Rutiger disagrees with you. And I was referring to his comment not necessarily the rating on BA.

Like I would have a problem with that. I was more commenting about when we start rating beers with a finite scale, you eventually have to start downgrading beers that you really enjoyed in the past. Ruination was brought up and you happen to provide the exact quote for it, so I used it. So you personally may have given Ruination a 90 when you first had it, but now that you have had Zombie Dust, Heady Topper, Hill Farmstead Beers, etc you are inclined to have to move Ruination down some pegs to 85 because there are now so many beers you think are better. Heady Topper being great does not make Ruination a lesser beer than it once was.

Excellent point. By the way, long time no see. We should get together and throw some back soon.

True story. After an expensive holiday season the wife has told me that I cannot buy any more beer until I start clearing out my stash at the house, so a perfectly good reason to share. Considering that most of the things in my stash are >8% bombers.

I'll be stopping by soon Back to the beeradvocate, barrel aged, high abv point. I really don't care what the ratings are. There are beers rated 85 that I thought were great, and there have been plenty of 90+ beers that didn't impress me and were very overhyped. What i hate most about overhyped beer is that it makes aquiring it that much more difficult.

You can stop by anytime you want with that Pelican Brewpub Barley wine I saw in your picture. And we can tackle that one and the Beautification that I have.

I think this may be true the more beers you try. What your palate thought was great and revolutionary 5 years ago, you may find to be just above average now. So I'd agree there is somewhat of a sliding scale as you try more and more things. 10 years ago I thought Abita made great beer. The more beer I've had over the years, the more my opinion changes about Abita. Their stuff just doesn't stand up once you realize what else is out there. But that's also not to say because you're used to eating ribeyes, NY strips and filets that you can't enjoy a burger or meatloaf every now and then as well.

I don't see many people drinking regular Stone Ruination anymore
I just got a 4 pack of Ruination over the weekend. Was a great beer then, and is still a great beer. Where I (and many of yall are from) Louisiana, you don't get options like Heady T, Hopslam, Zombie Dust, Surly, and the like. Would I love to try those beers? Absofrickinglutely. I just can't obtain them at the time being.
