Highly placed sources told CBS 2’s Marcia Kramer that Cuomo is negotiating with Assembly and Senate leaders for a package of gun control laws that would be a dramatic response to the gun violence besetting the nation, including the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.
“It’s a very divisive topic,” Cuomo said on Wednesday. “There’s a lot of energy on both sides. Some people are vehemently against’ some people think we’re out of our minds for not passing it.”

he is doing a good job positioning himself for 2016 with this.
I have no idea what this legislation means though. Is it actually a meaningful change?
I doubt it does anything to stop gun violence.

Appeals to the party base. Helps him get the nomination, then he can hope the R's shoot themselves in the foot or get Ogump to divide and conquer the country on social issues.
Plus he can point to the relatively low crime rate in NYC to "prove" it worked, even though crime has been low there for a long time.

I disagree, buddhavista. I think this will make for easy criticism of him. States like Ohia, Virginia, and Wisconsin have many blue dogs that are opposed to this.
While it might increase support in states like Massachusetts or Rhode Island, it will have a negative effect overall.
We shall see, though. Depends on his defense of it.

his bigger challenge is HRC, more so than blue dog states. And this shows him as a leader, pushing on hard issues.
It may hurt him in the general election, but I doubt it. Gun control polls decently. And its hardly like NRA types are going to vote for cuomo anyway.

Yeah..no shite...people are going to say that after 24 kids get shot up in an elementary school. Once the emotions subside, gun control will be rejected like it always has.

no they won't. Gun ownership isn't even close to 60%.
Only thing that matters anyway is the 5-8% middle. Pro gun control vote dem, pro-gun vote R, regardless of election.
Those in the middle might care, but I doubt it. Usually its all about the economy.

Either way, ball is in republican's court.
You going to vote for the party who ran the country into the ground? (assuming we are ran into the ground at that point)
If its not an issue, you going to vote for the party whos going to restrict your access to guns?
Furthermore, if the economy is bad enough, people might even be more protective of their gun rights come 2016
