I have been informed that Smith was on First Take this morning and that he spoke about the bounty scandal (bs). He said that the transcripts indicated that there was NO BOUNTY SYSTEM and that the league had to maintain its PR machine once it started.
He said that Saints fans and Sean Payton got a raw deal.
My speculation is that these transcripts will become public soon.

Goodell really isn't too bright.
He is keeping the Bounty BS going by not reinstating Payton.
Risky IMO....It may indeed blow up in his face

That was pretty powerful, coming from De Smith. It won't change anything, but powerful none-the-less. He has no dog in the coach's fight. Nor should he care about the fans. But he flat out said it anyway.

no doubt, Tagliabue removed any stake Smith had left in the scandal.

I remember reading that GODell could reinstate it if we didn't fight the punishments.

Smith has a stake in this called public sentiment. The only reason CBA negotiations play out in the press is because public opinion plays a factor. If he can make the league look evil then they are less likely to get public sympathy in the future. I'm not saying he's lying, just that it's in his interest to weaken the public standing of the commissioner.

Nah. It's the only thing that he can do. He has to keep a straight face. He has to spin the PR that he is doing the right thing and protecting the players as long as he can. It may have been stupid to start this whole mess, but at this point he can't admit that he was wrong.
