| Disingenuous Legislation Names - Do you agree with the tactic? (Posted on 1/7/13 at 10:27 am)
What is your opinion of the use of disingenuous names for bills in order to dupe the electorate? "Oh, he didn't vote for the Affordable Care Act? He must not want everyone to have affordable care." "He didn't support the Patriot Act? He must be a traitorous commie." I understand that that is about all of the information 90% of the electorate gets about the bill, but, IMO, it is an incredibly harmful tactic. What say the rest of you?

I hate it but what are you going to do? Write regulations on descriptions? That can get into very subjective territory.

I remember several years ago hearing G Gordon Liddy say the more patriotic the name of the bill, the more disingenuous/dangerous it is. Always.

I love them. Orwellian bill titles make it easy to figure out what is in the bill. Just assume it will do the opposite of whatever the title claims.

Well, both of those sound about right.

It's all about marketing. Reminds me of the pitches made by charities: "Together we can wipe out poverty across the globe." This is an obvious lie since poverty existed since creation and will exist till the 2nd coming. But it has an emotional appeal to non-thinkers.

It is a political process and you just aren't going to remove "spin." I don't mind it as much as out-right subterfuge. The Sandy relief act - but deals with fisheries in Alaska.

I completely agree. I was asking more about what your opinion of the process was.

my opinion is that the government is no longer of the people, by the people and for the people. Special interest groups are the only things that control government. If they get enough money for campaign contributions to overcome the negatives of the bill, they may just vote for it. Very few people vote their conscious or the will of the people they represent. They vote as their party tells them to vote or they will not be supported by party in their next election. The entire system is broken. And it is still one o the better ones out there. In part, the problem is the press. No longer are they a watchdog group, they are more a part of the problem.
