| Republicans Senators universally support John Kerry for Secretary of State (Posted on 1/7/13 at 9:20 am)
but oppose Chuck Hagel for Defense. In any rational world Kerry would be the less supported choice, based upon historical behavior, qualifications and partisanship.

I think I'm liking the Hagel choice. He has both the pro-War for Israel and the Praise for Gays segments of Congress with their panties all in a twist. Don't care for the Kerry pick, but at some point, you've got to realize Obama's still going to pick one of his people.

Both are great picks and the right men for the job. Hagel will be confirmed... The Republicans just need to posture for a bit before that AIPAC check clears.

generally whatever the senate wants universally, we should do the exact opposite.

Kerry is an empty suit. I wouldn't support him to coach a little league team.

Agreed but Hagel despises Israel so Obama want him some Hagel.

Does Hagel despise Israel or does he just think we shouldn't commit our soldiers to a military venture solely at Israel's need?

Well he can't be any less qualified than Hillary or less effective than Rice or Albright. He has served on the Senate Foreign Relations committee for a couple of decades so he has to have heard something about something regarding foreign policy. But I would largely agree I haven't seen any great idea or accomplishment out of him, he seems to sort of just like being there like Biden. You have any ability to expound on his suitability?

That is most likely to get his arse out of the Senate to start. The despisal of Hagel must make you angry on the gut level.

The reason they support him can't be because it would open up a Dem seat in Mass and allow Brown to run for it, could it?

This sounds about right, though I think so-called "expertise" and "big ideas" in foreign policy are overrated. See the disastrous and ludicrous failure known as neoconservatism.

They're getting desperate.
quote:
The Emergency Committee for Israel (ECI), a pro-Israel group, has purchased www.ChuckHagel.com to warn against President Obama's nomination of former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel (Neb.) for Defense secretary. Obama announced Hagel's nomination at a 1 p.m. press conference at the White House, and the selection is already facing criticism from some GOP lawmakers, who have raised questions about whether their former colleague would be a strong ally of Israel.
