| Is Education just a sham? How much do you really retain? Even just Highschool (Posted on 1/6/13 at 3:52 pm)
Like Elementary school- sure reading, writing, basic math(+-/*), state capitals, american history, basic stuff.....I think everyone remembers most of it but most of highschool and college....could you still pass the exact same test you passed 5-10 years ago? Example from a Virginia Highschool System: LINK Please don't use process of elimination >25% chance, but you must know the answer without choice. Earth Science Chemistry Geometry Biology What's the point of teaching everybody things that no one will remember? How much dumber is your average 35 year old from your average 18 year old?...if you were to give them then same test on subjects that they both have studied? If this is the case, WTF is education other than just busy work with hardly any longterm benefit?

The exercise of learning is as important as the material itself.

Honestly, it all depends on what said person wants to do in life. I'm in engineering, so yeah all the math/phys I learned in HS is pretty important. Having it put in my brain earlier made it a lot easier to recall for college.

I can answer every one of those aside from the Earth Science. IMO, even though a lot of people will end up with jobs that don't use most of their education, further education shows discipline, and helps improve your ability to take some information, understand it, then apply it. Which is pretty necessary in a lot of jobs that aren't blue collar.

It's not necessarily the individual things you learned along the way, but the lessons and abilities you were able to learn because you knew all of those steps along the way. Especially in Math. Learning more complex things every year allows your brain to learn and develop how to problem solve when you're an adult. Without that, well, the only thing you'll know how to do is most manual labor and/or fast food.

Plus the ability that you show to learn the subject matter also plays a part in your ability to learn on the job things. And much of the things you learn you continue to use throughout life. But as I am typing this, I will say the most useful course I took in high school was a typing class.

Always been in engineering. Turf management was my backup. I'm probably going back to CM for the spring semester though. Can't leave that place.
