| Shooting near houses (Posted on 1/6/13 at 11:23 am)
Got in a discussion with the FIL about shooting in the backyard out in the country. He claims that La law states that you must be 500 feet from an inhabited dwelling. My dad has a shooting range in his backyard that is less than that from the nearest neighbor. The sherrif's dept has been out before and told him as long as it's not in a residential area, feel free to shoot all you want. Is there a law that is just not enforced??

Its regulated by individual parish and city ordinances

The foot rule is different pretty much everywhere, it depends what city and parish your address is in.

ultimatley depends upon what inhabitants of said dwelling think of shooting range. If they don't call with a problem there likely won't be one. Sherifs don't just show up out of the blue in the country.

The neihbors did call the sherrif, and when the deputies came, they told my dad to have a nice day. Actually the neighbors have called numerous times, and everytime, the deputies have come out.

No state law that I'm aware of, just parish/city ordinances that regulate that.

I think the thing that he is thinking about would be 100ft away from a road. It is either that or 500ft. Cities have their own rules about discharging a firearm. In unincorporated areas, it is a free-for-all.
