| Handgun help for the Mrs. (Posted on 1/6/13 at 10:42 am)
She has both a .40 Springfield XD and a Tauras .38 ultra light...really does not like the .38 but she needs something similar in size for carrying while working late at our restaurant...any suggestions as a replacement? She is wanting a revolver though...

Not really too accurate, loud as hell and trigger is hard to pull

Anything for CC will be loud. A short barrel is the culprit of that. The Ruger LCR is a great revolver. So is the S&W air weight. Are you dedicated to sticking with a 38? I love my Kahr CM9 and its very shoot able. Then again, it's got a pretty stiff action and may take some practice to actuate.

My want to look at a Smith and Wesson 640. It's a 357 J frame. It's not an air weight frame and can shoot 38 spl +p's with no problem. One of the best snub 38's out there. You can usually find a -1 model(pre-lock) for less than $500. She could always move p to 357 if she ever wanted too. My wife likes mine because it's a little heavier and the +p ammo recoil is very manageable for small hands.

What about the M&P Shield? I'm torn between these two RIGHT NOW. Almost rode to Academy today to pick one up.

put em in yer hand... only way to compare without shooting... the feel of the LCR, trigger pull, hammerless, was what i preferred. Also lightweight for the front pocket...

We bought a Ruger LCR for my wife to carry about two weeks ago. I think it will be a fine gun for our need, but she had a really hard time shooting it with any accuracy the first time at the range. It's going to take some getting used to, and I'm not sure she will put the effort into it yet. Anyway, is it possible for you to go rent/shoot a couple and find one she likes, then buy it? That would be my suggestion.

True. That's why I wanted to go to Acaedmy. Haven't held either but a local shop does have the LCR.

she is very good at listing the disadvantages of a small frame revolver. You can get at the trigger with a trigger job (at least on Smiths) but the other 2 will be there with any snubby. How does she carry this gun? Most things that make a pistol good at carrying are bad for shooting. Maybe look for a thin single-stack nine?

If I were a woman and had a purse to drop it in, I'd choose the Ruger SRc over the LCR. It's a bit thicker and I know many will say the SRc is very concealable, to me, the slimmer the better.

S&W airweight .38. Hammerless, reliable, safe and easy to use. And less than $500.

In buying a weapon for self defense I would never let a hundred dollars scare me off of what I felt I should have.
